Insuring an Audi S2

The S2 is now a youngtimer. That shifts the question from rating group to how the value is established: on market value or on a recorded agreed value.

In brief

The S2 with its five-cylinder turbo and quattro is no longer an ordinary used car. For insurers that changes the central question: not which rating group the car falls into, but what amount will be paid out on a total loss or theft. On a standard policy that is the market value, and that follows from a valuation system which rarely values a well-maintained, original S2 correctly.

The alternative is a agreed value. A valuation by a recognised valuer fixes the value under Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code for a set period; within that period the insurer cannot rely on a lower value. Many companies offer this in a classic or youngtimer policy, with a lower premium in return for conditions: a maximum number of kilometres a year, storage in a locked space and a second car for everyday use.

Third-party liability cover remains compulsory here too under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM). Own-damage cover is a deliberate choice on this model: parts are scarce, repair is specialist work and after a loss the car is written off economic total loss sooner than a modern car. Have it agreed in advance whether there will be a repair or a payment and whether you may choose your own repairer.

Which cover suits an S2?

Three forms of cover, with the situations that arise most often on a youngtimer beneath them.

Compulsory

Third-party liability

The legally required cover for damage you cause to others.

  • Damage to other cars and injury
  • No cover for your own S2
  • Compulsory under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM)
  • Often chosen where use is limited
Intermediate option

Third-party liability + fire and theft

As well as third-party liability, a fixed list of events: theft, glass, fire, storm and collision with animals.

  • Theft and burglary damage
  • Fire and storm damage in storage
  • Glass damage, provided glass is available
  • Your own fault remains at your own expense
With a valuation

Classic or comprehensive policy

Own-damage cover on the basis of a recorded agreed value.

  • Valuation valid for a set period
  • Often a mileage limit
  • Storage requirement and second car
  • Clarity on a total loss

What makes the difference with the S2

Four points that count for more on a youngtimer than the premium itself.

Market value is the wrong starting point on this model

On a total loss a standard policy works from the market value according to a valuation system. For a car from this period that often produces an amount well below the market price of a good example. With a valuation report you fix the value under Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code for a set period. Have the valuation drawn up before you take out the policy and watch the period of validity; once it expires you fall back on market value.

Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code

Classic car conditions are hard conditions

The lower premium of a youngtimer or classic policy is set against specific obligations: a maximum number of kilometres per year, storage in a locked space, sometimes a minimum age for the driver, and the requirement that you have another car for everyday use. If you exceed the mileage or the car is regularly kept on the street, the insurer can reduce or refuse the payout. Keep a record of the mileage and report a move or a change of storage.

What is not covered

The following, among others, are outside the cover: wear, rust, corrosion and defects caused by deferred maintenance, even where they lead to consequential damage; mechanical and electronic defects without a collision, such as a cracked cylinder head gasket or a failed turbo; taking part in rallies, track days and speed or skill events; and damage while driving without a valid driving licence or under the influence. Restoration work and any increase in value are not paid for, and damage caused by intent or recklessness is excluded under Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code.

Repair or payment: agree it in advance

Parts for this model are available only to a limited extent and repair is specialist work. As a result a loss exceeds the value sooner and the insurer declares the car economic total loss, while you actually want to keep it. Ask in advance whether you may choose your own repairer, whether used original parts are permitted and whether you can buy back the wreck. Report a loss as soon as reasonably possible (Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code) and keep maintenance invoices and photographs as supporting evidence.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Valued amount or market value: the basis of the payout
  • Number of kilometres per year: often a hard upper limit
  • Storage: locked garage or the street
  • Age and experience of the driver: often a minimum age
  • Having a second car available: a condition of a classic policy
  • Type of cover and excess: third-party liability, third-party fire and theft or comprehensive

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Do I need a valuation report?

For own-damage cover it is strongly advisable. Without a valuation the insurer pays the market value on a total loss, and on a well-maintained example that often disappoints. A valuation by a recognised valuer fixes the value for a set period, so that there is no argument afterwards about what the car was worth.

When do I qualify for a classic policy?

That differs from one insurer to another. Most set a minimum age for the car and also make requirements as to mileage, storage, the driver's age and having a second car. If you do not meet all the conditions, a standard policy with a valuation is often a workable alternative.

What happens if I drive more kilometres than agreed?

That is an increase in the risk. The insurer can reduce the payout proportionately or, where the limit is consistently exceeded, refuse it and cancel the policy. If you expect to drive more, report it in advance; an adjusted mileage band costs premium, but keeps your cover in force.

Is rust or a mechanical defect insured?

No. Rust, corrosion, wear and defects caused by deferred maintenance fall outside every car policy, as do mechanical defects without a collision. Own-damage cover pays for damage caused by a sudden external event. Maintenance and restoration remain entirely at your own expense.

May I take the S2 to a track day?

Not under your ordinary policy. Driving on a circuit and taking part in speed, skill or rally events are excluded, even without timing. Separate temporary cover exists for events. Arrange it in advance and have it confirmed in writing exactly what it covers.

Can I choose my own repairer?

Under many classic policies you can; under standard policies often not without an additional premium. On a car of this age that is a relevant point: an independent specialist often works with used original parts. Agree in advance what is permitted and whether you can buy back the wreck on a total loss.
