Choosing motorcycle insurance that suits your motorcycle

There is no such thing as the best motorcycle insurance, but there is a policy that fits your machine, your licence and your use. Anyone who selects on those three points has less to argue about after a claim.

In brief

The choice starts with the form of cover. Third-party liability is compulsory for as long as the machine has an unsuspended registration. That follows from Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM). Above that you can choose third-party, fire and theft or comprehensive. The misunderstanding lies with third-party, fire and theft: that is not half a comprehensive cover but a list of events named individually. Fire, theft, storm, glass breakage, hail and a collision with animals at large are usually on it. A fall on a bend, tipping over on the drive or a collision you cause yourself are not, and are therefore covered only under comprehensive. How the versions are built up is set out under motorcycle insurance cover.

The second point is the rider. Your licence category is not a formality but a condition of cover. If you ride on an A2 licence a machine that exceeds the permitted power output, you are riding without valid entitlement. The injured party still has his loss paid, because the WAM protects him, but the insurer can recover that payment from you and the own damage stays at your expense. The same applies under a policy with a restricted group of riders: if you lend the machine to someone outside the description, own-damage cover lapses for that ride.

The third point is what you do with and to the machine. A different exhaust system, an altered ECU, a higher power output, a modified frame or a café racer conversion make your machine a different risk from the model you entered on the application form. Report it, because the duty of disclosure in Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code continues in the duty to notify changes that appears in virtually every policy. If you use the machine for delivery, courier runs or hire, that is business use and belongs with a business motorcycle insurance. If you also ride a lighter vehicle, see moped insurance.

What to look out for

Four provisions that determine whether a cheap policy also serves you well.

Third-party, fire and theft covers a list, not everything

Go through the list in the conditions and compare it per company. The differences usually lie in vandalism, collision with an animal, damage during transport and falling over without a collision. Two policies both called third-party, fire and theft can diverge on those points. If an event is missing from the list, there is no cover, not even where the damage was clearly not your fault.

Your licence is a condition of cover

Besides the category A1, A2 or A, there is the question of validity: an expired or seized licence leads to an exclusion. A temporary foreign licence or a test just passed can also be a reason for additional conditions. State on the application since when you have held the licence. An incorrect statement can be used by the insurer under Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code to reduce the payment.

Report modifications and accessories in advance

Accessories such as panniers, a screen, a satnav or an alarm are often covered only up to a proportion of the value named in the conditions, and then only where there is damage to the machine itself. Power-increasing modifications are a different story: they change the risk. If after a claim it is established that the machine was tuned up without your reporting it, reliance on the change of risk clause is a real possibility for the insurer.

Delivery, hire and circuit use

Carriage of goods or persons for hire or reward, hire and instruction are excluded under a private motorcycle policy. So are taking part in competitions, speed trials and runs on a closed circuit, including free practice. If you want to go on the track, arrange separate cover in advance. Damage caused by intent or recklessness falls outside the policy in any event. That is set out in Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Engine capacity and power: the heaviest factor in classifying the risk
  • Age and length of time holding a licence: how long you have held the category
  • Storage address and postcode: theft figures differ by area
  • Annual mileage and seasonal use: a summer machine is ridden differently from a daily one
  • No-claims years: the step on the no-claims scale
  • Type of cover and excess: third-party liability, third-party, fire and theft, or comprehensive

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

May I ride a restricted machine on an A2 licence?

Only if the restriction has been carried out under the prescribed procedure and the vehicle is registered as such. If you ride a machine that exceeds the permitted power output, there is no valid entitlement. The own damage then stays at your expense and the insurer can recover from you what has been paid to the other party.

Am I insured if I lend my machine out?

For third-party liability cover you are: it follows the vehicle, so an injured party can always turn to the insurer. For own damage the question is whether the rider falls within the group described. If an age limit or a restricted group of riders appears on the policy schedule, damage to your own machine is not covered if someone outside that group rides it.

Does the cover also apply abroad?

The green card shows the countries for which the third-party liability cover applies. Countries crossed out fall outside it. Own-damage cover and assistance sometimes have a different territory from the liability cover, and a breakdown on the road is not damage but assistance. Check both before you leave, and report a loss abroad as soon as possible, as Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code requires.

What if my machine was tuned up by the previous owner?

The statement on the application form still governs. When buying a second-hand machine, have it checked whether there are any deviations from the factory specification and report them. An unreported increase in power output can lead to a reduction or refusal of payment when a claim is made, because the insurer would have assessed the risk differently.
