Personal accident insurance for self-employed professionals (zzp'ers)
Personal accident insurance pays an amount agreed in advance on permanent injury or death. It does not replace income and does not cover illness. That difference alone decides whether it is worthwhile for you.

In brief
This is a fixed-sum insurance: the payment is an agreed amount and not compensation for loss suffered. There is therefore no calculation of what you actually lost, and the ban on profiting in Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code does not apply here. Payment is made on death caused by an accident and on permanent disability, with the sum insured multiplied by a percentage of loss of function. The general set-up and the family version are set out on the page family personal accident insurance.
For a self-employed person the main question is what you want it to solve. If you want continuing income when you cannot work for a longer period, this is not the right policy: that role belongs to disability insurance, which also pays for illness and pays periodically. Personal accident insurance is a one-off amount for the scenario with permanent consequences: alterations to the home, an adapted car, a buffer for the family.
Watch what is contained in the word accident as well. The conditions almost always describe it as a sudden, external effect of violence on the body, directly causing injury that can be established by a doctor. A slipped disc that develops gradually, a burnout, an infection or a condition that shows itself during work are not accidents. Medical costs themselves belong with your health insurance; this policy stands apart from that.

What to look out for
Four points that decide whether a payment is actually made after an accident, and how much.
Permanent disability is assessed in percentages
The insurer waits for a final medical position and then has the permanent loss of function assessed according to a fixed table: the loss of a finger, an eye, hearing. What is assessed is the body's loss of function, not the work you lose as a self-employed person. A guitar maker with a stiff finger receives the same percentage as someone doing office work, unless you take out an occupation-related version.
24 hours or only while practising your profession
Business personal accident cover sometimes runs only during working hours and commuting. For a self-employed person the line between work and private life is often thin. Check therefore whether the policy applies continuously; otherwise a fall at the weekend is followed by an argument about whether you were working at the time.
Existing complaints and the occupational class
If you already had loss of function in the part of the body affected, that is deducted. Your occupation also determines the class: work at height, with machinery or on the road falls into a heavier category than office work. Declare your work and any side activities in full, because Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code requires it and Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code attaches the consequences to it.
What falls outside the cover as standard
Excluded are accidents during driving under the influence, taking part in a criminal offence or a fight, and deliberately undertaking a reckless risk in which you expose yourself to danger needlessly. Hazardous sports such as climbing, deep diving, motorised sport and air sports are usually outside the cover as well. Injury you inflict on yourself deliberately stays outside the cover; Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code provides that an insurer does not have to pay for it.
What does your premium depend on?
- Sums insured: chosen separately for death and for permanent disability
- Occupational class: the classification follows from the work you actually do, not from your Chamber of Commerce description
- Extent of the cover: continuously, 24 hours, or limited to working time
- Age: and the final age at which the cover stops
- Sport and side activities: hazardous sports can lead to an exclusion or an additional premium
- People included: yourself only, or your partner and family members working in the business as well
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
What is covered after an accident
| Situation | Basic | Extended |
|---|---|---|
| You fall off a ladder during a job and are left with permanent injury to your hand | Yes | Yes |
| You break your ankle playing indoor football on a Sunday evening | No | Yes |
| You are killed in a road accident on the way to a job and leave a family behind | Yes | Yes |
| The contribution you have to pay yourself for physiotherapy after a fall from scaffolding | No | Provided that |
| Your back is worn out after years of lifting and you can no longer work full time | No | No |
| You are off with burnout after a long, demanding project period | No | No |
Personal accident insurance pays for injury caused by an accident, not for illness or wear.
Frequently asked questions
This is what people ask us most.
Can personal accident insurance replace an AOV?
No. An AOV pays periodically for as long as you are unfit for work, illness included, and looks at your fitness for your own occupation. Personal accident insurance pays once, only after an accident and only on permanent injury or death. The premium is therefore lower, but the scenario in which most self-employed people are unable to work, long-term illness, remains uninsured.
Am I covered if I have an accident while playing sport?
For ordinary recreational sport, generally yes, provided you have continuous cover. For hazardous sports there is often an exclusion or a separate acceptance; think of mountaineering, motorised sport, parachuting and diving below a depth named in the conditions. If you take part in such a sport, declare it on the application rather than trusting that it is included.
Do I receive a payment alongside damages from a liable other party?
In principle yes. Fixed-sum insurance stands apart from the settlement of a claim, so the payment is not automatically set off against what the liable party has to pay under Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Code. In assessing your loss, a court may in some circumstances take a payment into account as a benefit. Report the accident in both processes, therefore.
How quickly do I have to report an accident?
As soon as is reasonably possible; Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code requires you to report it as soon as you are aware of the event. For permanent injury there is often a shorter period for the first notification, because the insurer wants to be able to assess the link between the accident and the injury. On death there is usually a separate, short reporting period.
