In brief
Finass Verzekert brokers insurance from Avéro Achmea. We are not tied to one insurer: we compare the offerings of several insurers objectively, and the choice follows from the cover you need. For one application Avéro Achmea comes into view first, for another a different provider. What we mainly compare are the exclusions and clauses, not just the premium.
For transport and equipment it usually comes down to a combination of policies. You can insure a trailer separately or include it in a wider package; you can read how that works on the hub page on trailer insurance. If you use it for business, different acceptance questions apply and the trailer often belongs with a business trailer insurance. Heavy equipment falls under a plant and machinery insurance, goods carried under a goods in transit insurance.
With every insurer, including this one, the policy does not cover everything. War risks and nuclear reactions are excluded everywhere, as are flooding caused by the failure or overtopping of a primary flood defence. In addition, damage caused by wear and tear, inherent defect and gradually operating influences stays outside the cover, and Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code excludes damage caused by intent or recklessness. Those are not small print but the core of what insurance is and is not for.
This page deals with one situation. The full overview is on Compare trailer insurance.
What we look at
Four points that matter more when assessing a quotation than the difference in premium.
The clause sheet, not the brochure
Cover is determined by the policy schedule, the clause sheet and the conditions together, in that order. The clause sheet sets out the prevention requirements: a storage requirement, a prescribed lock, an alarm grade or a maintenance requirement. If you do not meet them at the time of a claim, the insurer may reduce or refuse the payout, however wide the cover may look on paper.
The type of cover determines what you get back
There is more difference between third-party, third-party fire and theft and comprehensive cover than one word. Just as important is the valuation arrangement: market value, purchase value or a valuation. Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code provides that a payout must not put you in a clearly better position; if your sum insured is too low, the claim is settled proportionately.
The right capacity and use
Business use of a private item, hiring out to third parties or driving for a client changes the risk. Declare that when you apply. Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code requires you to disclose what you know or ought to know; if it turns out afterwards that something was not disclosed, Article 7:930 DCC may reduce or cancel the payout.
Report as soon as you know
Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code requires you to report a claim as soon as you are reasonably aware of it. Do not wait until a claim letter arrives, and do not admit liability yourself. How to submit it is set out on report a claim; we take over the handling with the insurer.
What does your premium depend on?
- Type of item and value — the basis for the own-damage premium
- Type of cover chosen — third-party liability, third-party, fire and theft, or comprehensive
- Excess — a higher excess brings the premium down
- Use: private or business — business use counts more heavily
- Storage and security — locked storage counts towards acceptance
- Claims and insurance history — earlier claims and any cancellations
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.
What is covered
| Situation | Third-party liability | Comprehensive |
|---|---|---|
| The uncoupled trailer rolls off your drive into the neighbour's car | Yes | Yes |
| The trailer is stolen from the drive, despite a hitch lock | No | Yes |
| You jam the trailer in a multi-storey car park and damage the side panel | No | Yes |
| You lend the trailer for a weekend to a neighbour who damages it | Provided that | Provided that |
| The wooden floor panel turns out to have rotted through after years outdoors | No | No |
| Your own tools in the trailer are damaged in a collision | No | No |
Behind the car the trailer is covered by the WAM cover of the towing vehicle; uncoupled it sits on its own policy.
Frequently asked questions
The questions we are asked most often about this.
Do you always recommend this insurer?
No. We work with several insurers and compare them objectively. Which provider suits best depends on the item, the use and the conditions you need. Sometimes that is Avéro Achmea, sometimes another insurer with a more favourable clause or a wider description of cover. We explain that reasoning before you sign.
Can I place several policies with one insurer?
You can, and it is administratively clear. It is just rarely the sharpest solution on every element. We look at each policy to see which conditions fit and whether a package benefit outweighs weaker cover on one of the elements. When you claim, what counts in the end is the policy the claim falls under, not the number of policies you hold.
What happens if I have forgotten to disclose something?
Disclose it anyway, even if the policy is already running. The duty of disclosure in Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code concerns the situation when the insurance is taken out, but a change in use or storage should be reported during the term. If you do not and it proves relevant at claim time, the insurer may reduce or refuse the payout under Article 7:930 DCC.
Who handles my claim?
The insurer decides on cover; we support the file and conduct the discussion on your behalf. Keep photographs, invoices and proof of purchase, and report the claim as soon as possible. Where liability is involved, forward the claim letter without responding to its substance yourself. An admission of liability by you can make the handling more difficult.
