Compare cancellation insurance

Cancellation insurance does not cover you simply going off the idea. It covers a closed list of reasons, and that list is exactly where policies differ from one another.

In brief

Cancellation insurance reimburses the trip cost you lose when a covered reason prevents you from leaving, forces you home early or makes you miss part of the trip. These are named grounds: serious illness or the death of you or someone close to you, involuntary unemployment, medically necessary treatment, serious damage to your home.

What it does not cover is regret, a full diary, an expired passport or travel advice you do not like. If you want more scope, there are all-risks variants that reimburse part of the trip cost for a higher premium without your having to give a reason.

The deadline for taking out cover is the mistake most often made: you usually have to take out the insurance within seven days of booking, sometimes within fourteen. If you take it out later, a waiting period or an exclusion for existing circumstances often applies.

Independent, personal, sorted quickly

We compare your cancellation insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. What does your premium depend on?

  • Insured trip cost: the main basis for calculation
  • Continuous or per trip
  • Version chosen: named grounds or all risks
  • Number of insured persons
  • Area of cover
  • Excess

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Take out cover on the day you book

Virtually every cancellation policy has a period within which you must take it out, usually seven days after booking. If you do it later, a waiting period applies, or cover lapses for circumstances that were already foreseeable at that point. So book and insure in one and the same action.

Existing conditions are the biggest exclusion

Worsening of a condition that already existed when you took out the policy is excluded as standard. The same applies to treatment that was already planned. If you are travelling with someone with a chronic condition, ask explicitly how the policy deals with that. Some insurers work with medical acceptance or a clause.

Watch the travelling companion clause

If you travel with several people and one of them drops out, the question is whether the others may cancel as well or are only entitled to the additional costs. That differs from policy to policy, and with a jointly rented holiday home it is the amount that matters.

Cancelling or cutting short

The cover does not only apply before departure. If you have to cut the trip short, the insurance reimburses the unused part of the trip cost pro rata, and sometimes the extra cost of returning home. Check whether that last item is included or falls under your travel insurance.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

When do I have to take out the insurance?

Usually within seven days of booking, sometimes within fourteen. If you take out cover later, a waiting period applies, or an exclusion for circumstances that were already foreseeable at the time.

Can I cancel because I have gone off the idea?

Not on a policy with named grounds. An all-risks variant often reimburses part of the trip cost, usually around 75 per cent, without your giving a reason and limited to a number of times.

Is an existing condition covered?

Worsening of a condition that already existed when you took out the policy is excluded as standard, as is treatment that was already planned. Ask about medical acceptance if that applies to you.

What if one of my travelling companions drops out?

That depends on the travelling companion clause: sometimes the others may cancel as well, sometimes they are only reimbursed the additional costs. With a jointly rented house that makes a great deal of difference.

Do I get money back if I have to cut the trip short?

Yes, pro rata over the unused part of the trip cost. Whether the extra cost of returning home is included varies. That sometimes falls under travel insurance.

Is negative travel advice a valid reason?

Usually not. A colour code or advisory is not a ban. Only if you are actually prevented from travelling is there sometimes cover. Read that provision before you book.
