In brief

An exclusive valuables policy insures individually described items comprehensive and worldwide, including loss. The value is fixed with a valuation, preferably in the form of Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code, so that the amount is settled for the term of the policy.

What sets it apart from an ordinary valuables policy lies in the clauses and in what happens away from the home: transport to an auction or a restorer, a loan to a museum, a stay in a second home or a bank vault.

With collections there is also the question of partial loss: if one piece disappears from a series, the value of the whole falls. Not every policy pays for that loss in value.

Independent, personal, sorted quickly

We compare your valuables insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

Climate damage, craquelure and gradual deteriorationNo

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Total valued amount: the main basis for calculation
  • Type of objects: art, jewellery, watches, collections
  • Security: safe grade, alarm with monitoring centre, cameras
  • Territory and frequency of transport
  • Wearing and safe clause
  • Excess

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

The clause determines whether payment is made

Above a certain amount it applies that an item is in the safe when it is not being worn or displayed, often with an alarm connected to a monitoring centre. After a theft that is the first thing you will be asked about. Read the clause before you sign and align your practice with it; explaining afterwards that things were slightly different does not work.

Report transport and loans in advance

If a work goes to a restorer, an auction or an exhibition, that is a different risk from hanging on the wall at home. Without notification there is often no cover away from the home. On a loan to a museum, the institution sometimes arranges cover of its own; have it set out who insures what and from what moment.

Partial loss with collections

If one piece disappears from a series, the loss is greater than that one item: the series is no longer complete and the value of the whole falls. Only with an arrangement for partial loss is that fall in value paid. With coins, stamps, watches and series of artworks that is the difference that counts.

Insuring a collection

Gradual deterioration remains excluded

Craquelure, fading from light, damp damage and insect attack are treated everywhere as a gradual process and are not insured. That makes climate control and where a work is hung not a luxury but risk management. Document your climate installation. It helps if there is an argument.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

What makes this different from an ordinary valuables policy?

The sums insured are higher, items are described individually and there is cover for situations away from the home: transport, loans, a stay elsewhere. The clauses are correspondingly more specific.

How often do I have to have a new valuation?

Usually every three to five years. In sharply rising markets, such as sought-after watches or contemporary art, sooner is wise. An expired valuation means payment at market value.

What is a safe clause?

The provision that prescribes when an item belongs in the safe. Compliance is a condition of the theft cover and it is the most common reason for refusal.

Is a loan to a museum covered?

Only if you report it in advance. Sometimes the institution insures the work itself; set out who covers what and from what moment the risk passes.

Will I be paid for the loss in value after restoration?

Only if that is included. A restored work fetches less on the market than an undamaged example. That difference is called loss in value and is a separate section.

What about a collection from which one piece disappears?

With an arrangement for partial loss, the fall in value of the series is paid as well. Without that arrangement, only the item that has gone.
