Home contents insurance through OOM

An ordinary Home contents insurance is tied to a Dutch Home address. If you live or work abroad for a while, your household goods fall precisely outside that description.

In letter

Most contents policies insure belongings at one described risk address in the Netherlands. Anyone posted overseas, seconded or emigrating moves their household goods to an address that does not fit that description. The policy does not always stop automatically, but the Cover no longer matches reality, and that comes to light when there is a claim rather than at the time of the move.

Three separate moments come into play. First the Dutch Home you leave behind: will it stand empty, will it be let, or will contents be left in it? Standing empty is a change of risk in almost every policy, with limited Cover as the result. Then the Transportation of the household goods, which is not a contents risk but a transit risk. And finally the contents at the foreign address, where local construction, security and Claims handling apply.

A home contents insurance for a stay outside the Netherlands is therefore a different product from an ordinary policy with a change of address. On your return the order is reversed and the Cover has to follow the Dutch home again. We set the periods out on a timeline so that no gap falls between departure, stay and return.

Through Finass or direct with OOM Insurance?

The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per Situation below.

Basic Cover

The basic Cover insures the core of your home contents insurance. We show what OOM and other insurers offer within it.

  • Fire & lightning strike
  • Storm
  • Possessions away from Home
  • Water damage

Extended Cover

As well as fire and storm, also water damage, belongings outside the home and, with Comprehensive cover, your own accidents.

  • Burglary, theft & Vandalism
  • Jewellery & valuables (limited)
  • Machinery & equipment

Comprehensive Cover

The most complete cover. We compare OOM's Extended version with the market.

  • Garden & garden furniture
  • Jewellery & valuables (limited)
  • Glass breakage
  • Higher Cover for valuables

A home contents policy has sub-limits: for jewellery, Audiovisual equipment and collections a lower limit applies than for the rest of the contents. If your items exceed that, you insure them separately on a valuables policy, usually on the basis of a valuation (7:960 DCC). Underinsurance leads to a proportionately lower payout.

This overview concerns our Service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (insurance card); you receive both before you take out Cover.

What does your Premium depend on?

  • Country and region of stay. The local burglary figures, natural hazards and the availability of repair businesses determine the risk profile.
  • Length of stay. A posting of a few months calls for a different solution from a move for an indefinite period.
  • Status of the Dutch Home. Standing empty, letting or contents left behind is an independent risk alongside the foreign address.
  • Volume of the goods taken with you. A full household in a sea container is something other than a few suitcases going to a furnished Home.
  • Security of the Home abroad. Locks, bars, guarding or a gated complex all count towards the local burglary risk.
  • Including the Transportation in the cover. The move itself is separate Cover and not part of the home contents insurance.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

The risk address is the heart of the policy

Your contents are insured at the address shown on the policy schedule. If those contents move abroad, that is a change in risk which the policy conditions require you to report. If you do not, the insurer can assess at claim stage what it would have done had it known the true Situation. A change of address to a country abroad also cannot simply be processed on a Dutch policy.

The Home left behind and standing empty

A Home that is not lived in for months on end falls under the policy conditions on vacancy or unoccupancy, usually with a fall-back to fire and storm only. Theft, Vandalism and water damage then often fall away. If you let the property, that is a different situation with its own provisions, and once it is let, the contents you left behind are rarely still insured as they were.

Moving by sea or by road

Damage during the Transportation of your household goods is not a contents claim. A container lost overboard, a load of boxes arriving damp or a removal van broken into belongs on a Transportation insurance or with the remover's liability, which is almost always limited to an amount per unit of weight. Draw up an inventory list with values beforehand, because without that list the extent of the loss cannot be established afterwards.

What remains excluded at a foreign address

Even a policy that covers you outside the Netherlands excludes war situations, civil commotion and government action such as seizure or confiscation. The same applies to damage from earthquake and volcanic eruption, which in some destination countries is a genuine risk. Loss without an identifiable event and the gradual effect of damp or heat also remain outside the Cover, and the latter arises more often in tropical climates than here.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Can I take my current contents policy abroad with me?

Generally not. The policy is tied to a Dutch risk address and most insurers will not Accept a change of address to a country abroad. A policy designed for a stay outside the Netherlands is then needed. In any event report your departure in advance, because an unreported move of the contents affects the cover at the very moment you need it.

What happens to my Home in the Netherlands?

As soon as it is not lived in for a longer period, the policy conditions speak of it standing empty and the cover usually falls back to a limited number of perils. Theft, Vandalism and water damage often fall away. If you let the property, different provisions apply again and the contents you leave behind are rarely insured as before. Both situations have to be arranged separately.

Is the move itself insured?

Not on a home contents insurance. Damage in transit falls under transit Cover or under the remover's liability, and that is limited by contract to an amount per unit of weight. For valuable pieces that ceiling is quickly reached. An inventory list with descriptions and photographs, drawn up before packing, is the most important piece of evidence in these claims.

And when I come back to the Netherlands?

The order is then reversed: the foreign Cover stops on departure and the Dutch policy has to start at the moment the goods are at the new address. Between those two moments comes the container's return journey, and that is transit again. We plan that transition ahead so that no period arises in which nobody carries the risk.
