Finance: we refer you on

We provide insurance. We do not provide finance and do not broker it. What we do here is explain what to look out for, so that you compare on the price of the credit and not on the monthly payment.

In brief

Please note: borrowing money costs money. Every form of finance costs interest and charges. Together these make up the annual percentage rate (APR), and that percentage makes offers comparable with one another. The monthly payment does not: it becomes lower the longer the term, while in total you pay more.

Finass Verzekert advises on and arranges non-life insurance, under AFM licence 12016589. Consumer and mortgage credit fall under other licence categories. For those we refer you to providers that do hold the licence. That firm carries out the assessment and the advice independently.

Every licensed provider consults the BKR for credit from € 250 with a term longer than one month, and assesses whether the payments fit your income and fixed outgoings. Providers claiming it can be done without that check generally do not hold the licence.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between affordable finance and expensive finance.

The monthly payment is not a price

A lower monthly payment almost always means a longer term and therefore more interest in total. The annual percentage rate converts interest and charges into a single figure per year and makes offers comparable. Also ask for the total cost of credit: the amount you have paid at the end over and above what you borrowed.

Buying room with interest-only credit costs money later

With credit on which you pay interest only or draw down repeatedly, the debt remains. The monthly payment looks low, but a moment comes when the whole principal has to be repaid. So always look at the repayment schedule and at the question when the debt reaches zero.

Borrowing without an assessment does not exist here

Providers with a Dutch licence are required to consult the BKR (the Dutch credit register) for credit from € 250 with a term longer than one month. Anyone advertising credit without a check is generally operating without a licence or from abroad. You then have no right to the statutory credit information and no access to Kifid.

Finance often brings an insurance requirement with it

If you finance a car, a home or a business asset, the lender usually imposes requirements on the insurance: own-damage cover on the vehicle or a buildings policy with the bank as beneficiary. That part we do handle. Declare the actual use in doing so. The duty of disclosure of 7:928 DCC applies in full.

What to look out for when comparing

  • Annual percentage rate: the only figure that lets you compare offers fairly
  • Total cost of credit: what you repay over the whole term above what you borrowed
  • Term: shorter means a higher payment and almost always a lower total price
  • Penalty-free repayment: ask in advance exactly what early repayment or redemption costs
  • BKR check and affordability: the check prevents over-borrowing and protects you too
  • The provider's AFM licence: no licence means no statutory protection and no Kifid

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Does Finass Verzekert provide or broker finance?

No. We advise and act as brokers on general insurance only, under AFM licence 12016589. Credit and mortgages fall under other licence categories. For those products we refer you to providers registered for them. They carry out the assessment and the advice independently and are responsible for it themselves.

What exactly is the annual percentage rate?

All the costs of the credit, expressed as a percentage per year: interest plus any additional charges. Because every licensed provider calculates it in the same way, you can use it to compare offers. The monthly payment can mislead, because it falls as soon as the term is stretched while the total price rises.

Why is my application checked against the BKR?

To prevent over-borrowing. Licence holders must consult the BKR for credit from 250 euros with a term longer than one month, and also assess whether the payments fit your income and fixed outgoings. If you are refused, that says something about affordability; carrying on looking for a provider that will say yes is usually the most expensive route.

Do I have to take out insurance with finance?

The lender often imposes requirements: own-damage cover on a financed vehicle or buildings insurance on a home or premises, with the bank as beneficiary. Payment protection is sometimes offered. That is usually not compulsory. Compare its cost with any income or life cover you already have.

What if I can no longer afford the payments?

Contact the credit provider straight away. It is obliged to consider a payment arrangement with you and reports arrears to the BKR. Do not wait until debt collection follows, because the costs then mount. You can find independent help through your local authority or a debt counsellor. There is no charge for that.

Your insurance with us after all?

We compare several insurers on premium and conditions and, if you wish, arrange the switch.
