Compare Valuables Insurance

Your home contents insurance has a ceiling for jewelery and equipment that is separate from your total sum insured. Above that amount, or as soon as you take the items out of the house, the cover stops.

In letter

Valuables insurance insurances individually described items comprehensive and worldwide. The distinctive feature is that loess is covered as well &mdash. Not only theft and damage. That is exactly what a Home contents policy never does.

You fix the value with a Valuation. If it is drawn up as a valuation within the meaning of Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code, the value is fixed and the insurer cannot rely on underinsurance during the term. With jewelery and sought-after watches, periodic revaluation matters, because gold prices and market values rise rather than fall.

Against those conditions. The Wearing and safe clause describes when an item may be worn and when it belongs in the safe. If you do not comply, the theft Cover lapses: and that is the most common reason for refusal.

What does Valuables Insurance cover?

The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per Situation below.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy Conditions and the insurance card (insurance card) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out Cover. Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

The sub-limit on your Home contents policy is the reason

Within your home contents insurance a ceiling of its own applies to jewelery and to audiovisual equipment, however high your total sum insured. If your property is worth more, the excess amount is uninsured. Check those ceilings against what you actually have in the house. That is usually the moment this insurance comes up.

Home Contents insurance (Contents insurance)

A Valuation is not simply a Valuation report

For protection against underinsurance, the valuation must be drawn up as intended in Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code. An ordinary statement of value from a jewel does not always meet that standard. Ask expressly for a valuation that meets that requirement and watch the period of validity; expired valuations lead to payment at market value.

Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code

The clauses are not a formality

Above a certain amount it almost always applies that the item is in a safe when you are not wearing it, sometimes with a requirement for an alarm connected to a monitoring center. After a theft that is the first thing you will be asked about. Read the clause before you sign and align your behavior with it, or choose a policy with a lighter requirement.

Document everything at the time of purchase

After a loss the first question is whether the item existed and what it was worth. Keep the purchase invoice, the box, the papers and the serial number, and photograph everything. Keep that digitally and not only at Home; after a fire or burglary it is often the only evidence left.

What does your Premium depend on?

  • Agreed value: the main basis for calculation
  • Type of items: watches, Jewellery, art, equipment
  • Security at Home: safe, alarm, monitoring center
  • Area of coverage: the Netherlands, Europe or worldwide
  • Wearing and safe clause
  • Excess

Insurers weigh these details differently. That's where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

What does this insurance cover that my Home contents policy does not?

Loss, theft away from home and damage caused by your own actions, worldwide. Home Contents insurance covers your belongings at home up to a sub-limit per category and away from home hardly at all.

Is a Valuation compulsory?

Above a certain amount, almost always. Have it drawn up as a Valuation within the meaning of Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code. The value is then fixed and the insurer cannot rely on underinsurance during the term.

How often do I need a new Valuation?

Usually every three to five years, and sooner where gold or market prices have risen sharply. An expired Valuation means payment at market value, and with sought-after pieces that works out badly.

What is a Wearing and safe clause?

A provision describing when you may wear the item and when it belongs in the safe. Compliance is a condition of the theft Cover and it is the most common reason for refusal.

Can heirlooms be insured?

Yes, on the basis of a valuation. Sentimental value is not paid for; materials and craftsmanship are. Have old pieces described and photographed expressly.

What do I need when I claim?

A purchase invoice with the serial number, a Valuation report, photographs and, in the event of theft, a police report. Keep that digitally, so that it is not lost along with everything else after a fire or burglary.
