Liability
- Covered while coupled
- Under the car's third-party liability cover
- Uncoupled: no longer covered
As long as the caravan is behind the car, liability runs through your motor insurance. The moment you uncouple it, that stops: and that is exactly when it stands still for months.

For liability a coupled caravan is included in the third-party liability cover of the towing vehicle. Damage to the caravan itself never is, and once uncoupled that liability cover falls away as well.
Caravan insurance covers the caravan itself: own-damage cover against damage and theft, on the road, on the campsite and during storage. You can also choose cover for the awning and contents, which are not part of the list price.
The storage is the decisive point for the premium and for acceptance. A caravan stands still for most of the year, and that is when fire, storm and theft damage happen. Insurers usually require an approved hitch lock and want to know where the vehicle spends the winter.
We compare your caravan insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

A trailer or caravan is not an independent motor vehicle and therefore has no insurance requirement of its own. Damage you cause to others with it falls under the third-party liability cover of the towing vehicle, as long as the combination is coupled (Article 2 WAM). Once the trailer is uncoupled and has come to a standstill, that cover no longer applies.
This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
We look at the terms as well as the premium, and stay your point of contact when there is a claim.
We are not tied to one insurer and compare on the basis of an objective analysis of several companies.
You call or email someone who knows your file. No menu options, no changing call centres.
We cancel your old policy and align the start date, so you are never a day without cover.
We report the claim and monitor how it is handled. In urgent cases you can reach us on the emergency line.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.
The third-party liability cover on your car continues as long as the caravan is coupled. If it stands uncoupled on the campsite, at your home or in storage, that cover no longer applies: and damage to the caravan itself was never covered in the first place. That is why a separate policy exists.
Caravans are towed away, not broken into. Insurers therefore almost always require an approved hitch lock and sometimes a wheel clamp or tracker, with additional requirements during the storage period. Keep the proof of purchase and both keys.
Add up what is in and on the caravan: awning, canopy, mover, bicycle carrier, crockery, bedding, camping furniture. On a well-equipped caravan that soon comes to several thousand euros, and it is not part of the list price. Declare it separately with its own sum insured.
If you hire out the caravan, even occasionally through a platform, that is commercial use and is excluded on a standard policy. Platform cover usually applies only during the hire period; check what applies between two hires and what excess the hirer carries.
This is what people ask us most.
Only for liability and only while it is coupled. Damage to the caravan itself is never covered, and once uncoupled the liability cover falls away as well.
Not automatically. You insure the awning, canopy, mover, crockery and camping furniture with their own sum insured alongside the own-damage value.
Almost always an approved hitch lock, sometimes with a wheel clamp or tracker as well, and with extra requirements during storage. Keep the proof of purchase and both keys.
Under own-damage cover, yes. Hail is one of the most common causes of loss on caravans, certainly in summer on the campsite.
Drain the water or keep to a minimum temperature, and declare the storage location. Frost damage caused by neglect is not paid.
Not on a standard policy. Hiring out is commercial use; through a platform, their cover usually applies only during the hire period.
