Compare golf insurance

A golf set is rarely at home when something happens to it. It is in the car, in a locker or on a buggy: exactly the places where your home contents insurance stops.

In brief

Golf insurance covers your equipment against theft, loss and damage, including away from home and abroad. Your home contents policy covers the set at home up to a sub-limit and away from home barely at all; and away from home is where the damage happens.

The second element is liability on the course. If your ball hits a fellow player, a car in the car park or a window of the clubhouse, you are liable for that. Where a golf ball causes injury the amounts run high, and not every personal liability insurance (AVP) handles golf claims without argument.

Many policies also include small extras: a payment for a hole in one, cover for your membership fee during a long-term injury, and sometimes the buggy you hire.

Independent, personal, sorted quickly

We compare your golf insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Value of the equipment: the main basis for calculation
  • Area of cover: the Netherlands, Europe or worldwide
  • Modules chosen: equipment, liability, membership fees
  • Number of insured persons
  • Excess
  • Membership of a club

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Away from home is exactly where things go wrong

The set is in the boot, in a locker or beside the buggy. Theft from a car is almost always excluded on a home contents policy, or capped at a low amount, and in the street nothing applies at all. That is the reason this policy exists.

Home contents insurance (inboedelverzekering)

Injury from a golf ball runs into high amounts

A ball travelling at speed into a head or an eye causes serious injury, and with it a claim that can run into tens of thousands. Your personal liability insurance (AVP) covers that in principle, but check whether sport in general and golf in particular are included. Some policies impose restrictions there.

Liability insurance

Breakage while playing is not a given

A club that breaks during a stroke is neither theft nor a peril coming from outside. Some policies cover breakage during normal use, others only breakage in an accident. With an expensive driver or a full set of irons that is the difference that counts; ask about it expressly.

A separate arrangement often applies when travelling

If you take the set on a golf trip, the question is whether the golf policy applies worldwide, or whether your travel insurance covers the luggage. Airlines also apply their own limits when sports luggage is damaged. Before you leave, check which of the three takes precedence.

Continuous travel insurance

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Is my golf set not already insured under my home contents policy?

At home it often is, up to a sub-limit. Away from home barely at all: theft from a car is usually excluded or covered up to a low amount, and on the course nothing applies.

Am I liable if my ball hits someone?

Yes, if you are at fault. Where there is injury the amounts run high. Check whether your personal liability insurance (AVP) includes sport and golf without restriction.

Is a broken club covered?

That varies. Some policies cover breakage during normal use, others only breakage in an accident. Ask about it expressly if you play with expensive clubs.

What does the hole-in-one payment involve?

A fixed amount towards the traditional round of drinks after a hole in one, usually on production of a statement from the club.

Does my policy also apply abroad?

That depends on the territorial limits you choose. On a golf trip your travel insurance may also cover the luggage; airlines apply their own limits for sports luggage as well.

Will I get my membership fees back if I am injured?

Under many policies you will, pro rata, when a long-term injury stops you playing. A minimum period and a medical certificate usually apply.
