Insuring an Audi SQ2

The SQ2 is a short, tall compact car with the power of a sports model; insurers therefore assess it separately from the standard Q2 versions.

In brief

The SQ2 stands out for an unusual combination: a small body segment with a high power-to-weight ratio. List price, weight and power all three count towards the rating group, and on a compact car with a sporting drivetrain that classification works out differently from what the size suggests. So always ask for a quote by registration number and exact model designation, not for a 'Q2'.

Third-party liability insurance is compulsory under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM) and covers only what you cause to someone else. Damage to the car itself falls under own-damage cover. On this model that choice turns mainly on the wheels, the bumper skins and the sensors: a compact car is parked in town a great deal, and kerb, wheel and parking damage are the most common types of claim here.

Two things determine whether the insurer will accept the car: departures from the factory specification and the security. Both fall under your duty of disclosure and must be on the table before you take out the policy.

Which cover suits an SQ2?

Three forms of cover, with an overview beneath them of the situations that arise most often with this car.

Compulsory

Third-party liability

The legally required cover for damage you cause to others.

  • Damage to other cars and injury
  • No cover for your own SQ2
  • Compulsory under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM)
  • Rarely suitable for this model
Intermediate option

Third-party liability + fire and theft

As well as third-party liability, a fixed list of events: theft, glass, fire, storm and collision with animals.

  • Theft and burglary damage
  • Windscreen damage and windscreen replacement
  • Fire, storm and hail damage
  • Your own fault remains at your own expense
Most chosen

Comprehensive

Also damage to your own car caused by you or without a third party involved.

  • Single-vehicle collisions and parking damage
  • Damage with no known other party
  • Often a replacement value as new or purchase price arrangement
  • You can choose your own excess

What is covered

What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) that you receive before you take out cover.

What makes the difference with the SQ2

Four points that come up more often with this model than with an average compact car.

A sports version in a small segment

Insurers work from the model designation in the vehicle register, not from what the car looks like on the outside. A compact crossover with a sporting drivetrain and four-wheel drive falls into a different class from the entry-level versions of the same range. When you apply, give the registration number and the exact version. A policy taken out on a lighter variant produces a premium that turns out not to hold up when a claim is handled and can lead to an additional charge or a refusal.

Town, kerbs and large wheels

A car of this size is mostly used for short journeys: commuting, shopping, parking between other cars. That makes wheel, tyre and parking damage the most common item. Damage to a wheel or tyre on its own is only paid for where it follows from a covered event; hitting a kerb without a collision does not always come under that. If there is a camera or radar in the bumper or windscreen, calibration is added to the repair after replacement. Choose your excess with that claims picture in mind.

Report tuning and security before you sign

An increase in power, a non-factory exhaust, lowering springs or different wheels alter the risk. Report them in advance: on entering into the contract the duty of disclosure in Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code applies, and a breach of it can cause the payout to lapse under Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code. If the car has keyless entry, ask whether the insurer requires an approved alarm or an additional device. If that requirement has not been met, theft is not covered.

What is not covered

The following, among others, are outside the cover: speed and skill events and driving on a circuit, even on a leisure run without timing; mechanical and electronic defects without a collision, such as a worn clutch or a failed transmission; and driving without a valid licence or under the influence. Damage caused by intent or gross fault is also excluded under Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code. You report a claim as soon as reasonably possible; Article 7:941 DCC requires that.

What is not covered

The following, among others, are outside the cover: taking part in speed or skill trials and driving on a track, even on a touring run; wear and tear and mechanical or electronic defects without a collision, such as a failed clutch or transmission; and damage while driving without a valid driving licence or under the influence. Damage to a wheel or tyre on its own is only paid for where it results from a covered event, and damage caused by intent or recklessness is excluded under Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code.

Report tuning, accessories and security

An increase in power, a different exhaust, lowering springs or non-factory wheels alter the risk. Report them in advance: on entering into the contract the duty of disclosure in Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code and a breach of it can void the payout (Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code). If you drive a version with keyless entry, ask whether the insurer requires an approved alarm system or additional security. You report a claim as soon as reasonably possible, as Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code requires.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Exact version on the registration. The sports version falls into a different class from the standard variants of the same range.
  • Age of the regular driver. On a compact car with a lot of power, a young driver counts for extra.
  • Wheel size and departures from standard. Different wheels, a sports exhaust or a change in power can lead to a loading or a refusal.
  • Security with keyless entry. An approved alarm or additional device can be a condition of theft cover.
  • Where the car is kept and the postcode. Parking on the street in town gives a different damage and theft picture from a garage.
  • Type of cover and excess. Third-party liability, third-party fire and theft or comprehensive, with the excess you choose yourself.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Why does the SQ2 work out higher than a standard Q2?

Because the rating group is determined by list price, weight and power together. On this version the value and the power are higher, while the weight remains relatively low. On top of that come higher repair costs because of the four-wheel drive, the larger wheels and the sensors in the bumper and windscreen. How much the difference comes to varies by insurer, so comparing pays on this model.

I am considering chip tuning. What does that mean for the policy?

Report it before the modification. An increase in power is an increase in the risk: some insurers accept it for an additional premium, others decline the car. If you go ahead without reporting it, the insurer can reduce or refuse the payout when you claim and cancel the policy. The same applies to a non-factory exhaust, different wheels or suspension modifications.

Is a damaged wheel covered?

Only where the damage arises from a covered event, for example a collision. A wheel you put against a kerb without further damage falls outside the cover under many policies, and otherwise under comprehensive cover with an excess. With large wheel sizes a single wheel with a tyre soon costs more than your excess, so have the conditions on this point set out side by side explicitly.

What if the car is imported?

Report that when you apply. On an imported example the specification and the original list price sometimes differ from the Dutch reference, which has consequences for the rating group and for how the value is established after a loss. Make sure the registration document, the import papers and the policy all state the same version, otherwise the argument only arises at the moment you claim.

Calculate the premium for your SQ2?

Ask for a no-obligation quote using the registration number. We compare both the premium and the conditions for this version.
