In brief

Wacker Neuson supplies a lot of equipment that two people can lift: vibrating plates, rammers, floor saws, generators and poker vibrators, alongside compact excavators and dumpers. For insurance that is an awkward middle ground. A plant and machinery policy works with a schedule listing each machine by serial number; small equipment is usually insured under a single collective item, with a limit per event.

Exactly where the boundary lies differs from insurer to insurer. If a vibrating plate is on neither list, it is uninsured against theft. And theft is the most important cause of loss in this segment: the equipment is light, sought after and disappears from a van or a site hut without anything being forced.

There is another risk with vibrating equipment that is structurally underestimated, and it does not end up on the plant policy but on your employer's liability: hand-arm vibration.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Composition of the plant fleet. The ratio between numbered machines and small equipment in the collective item.
  • Method of insuring. Item by item on the schedule, or under a collective item with a limit per event.
  • Storage and transport. A van, site hut, container or warehouse, and which locks and alarms go with it.
  • Working environment. Road building alongside traffic, inner-city groundwork or work on a closed site.
  • Employees' exposure. The number of hours worked with vibrating equipment and which measures have been recorded.
  • Theft claims record. Earlier break-ins to a van or site hut weigh most heavily in this segment.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Item schedule or collective item: choose deliberately

Machines above a certain value appear on the plant schedule with make, type and serial number and are thereby insured individually. Smaller equipment falls under a collective item with a limit per event. If the van with the complete kit is stolen, that limit is quickly too low and underinsurance arises across the whole item. Once a year, add up what is actually out on the road and adjust the item accordingly.

Theft from a van, site hut and container

For small equipment, cover stands or falls with the clauses on storage. Many policies exclude theft from a vehicle between certain hours, or require signs of forced entry, or impose requirements on the lock of a site hut and container. If the van is opened with a key or the hut was left open, there is no cover. Read which clause is on your policy before you leave the van standing fully loaded.

Hand-arm vibration is an occupational disease

Anyone working with rammers, vibrating plates and breakers for years risks permanent complaints in the hands and arms. That claim does not come to your plant policy but to your employer's liability: Article 7:658 of the Dutch Civil Code requires you to provide a safe working environment and to take measures against exposure, and Article 7:611 DCC adds the duty to act as a good employer. Record exposure times and provide and document protective measures, because the claim comes years later.

Sawing and grinding fall under the hot work clause

A floor saw, an angle grinder and a torch produce sparks. If that causes a fire in a building or on a site, virtually every liability policy contains a hot work clause: a permit to work in advance, removal of flammable material, an extinguisher within reach and a check after the work is finished. Without those steps, fire damage is refused. Storing fuel on site also has its own conditions.

Repairs and parts

Parts are cheap and quickly available.

Acceptance differs per insurer

Not every company applies the same policy for this make. With unusual versions, the question is not what it costs but who will accept it.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Is my vibrating plate on the plant schedule or under tools?

That differs from insurer to insurer and depends on a value threshold. Machines above that threshold appear on the item schedule with a serial number; below it, equipment falls under a collective item with a limit per event. Check that every machine really falls under one or the other, because equipment on neither list is uninsured against theft.

Are the tools in my van insured at night?

Often only subject to conditions. Many policies exclude theft from a vehicle between certain hours at night or require demonstrable damage from forced entry. If the van is opened with a copied key, those signs are missing. Read the clause on your own policy, because it determines whether it is worth emptying the van in the evening.

Can an employee hold me liable for vibration complaints?

Yes. Permanent complaints in the hands and arms after years of working with vibrating equipment are a recognised occupational disease. Article 7:658 of the Dutch Civil Code places the duty of care on you and Article 7:611 DCC supplements it with the duty to act as a good employer. Such claims come years later and are assessed on what you recorded and which measures you took at the time.

What is a hot work clause?

A condition that applies to work involving sparks or a naked flame, such as sawing, grinding and burning. It requires a permit to work in advance, the removal of flammable material, extinguishers within reach and a check after the work is finished. If it is not complied with and a fire starts, the liability insurer refuses the claim.
