In brief

The RS2 was built over a short production period and in small numbers, together with Porsche, on the basis of an 80 Avant. Parts of the braking system, the mirrors and the wheels come from the Porsche parts bin of the time. The car is now well over thirty years old. That moves it out of the ordinary car insurance domain towards classic car insurance, with different conditions and a different concept of value.

On an ordinary policy the market value is paid on a total loss. On a car with collector's value that market value is no usable measure: prices are set by originality, mileage and history. So work with an agreed value valuation by a recognised valuer, with photographs and a description of the condition. Article 7:960 DCC prohibits you from profiting from a loss, but a valuation report fixes in advance what it is you are losing.

A classic car scheme is cheaper, and there is a reason for that: restrictions on use are attached to it. Think of a maximum number of kilometres a year, a ban on commuting and a requirement about storage. If you drive the car every day, that scheme does not fit and a mainstream car insurance on a valued basis remains the right route.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Market value is no measure on this car

A car of this age does not appear at its true value in any depreciation table. Without a valuation report the loss adjuster only sets the figure after the damage, and the conversation then turns on comparable cars for sale that barely exist. Have the car valued in advance, including the interior, the original wheels and repairs you can evidence. Note the report's period of validity: once it expires, you fall back on the market value.

Parts are the reason claims run over

Body panels, glass, headlights and model-specific parts are no longer available new. Repairs are done with used original parts or by skilled hand, and that takes time. Agree in advance that used original parts are permitted and that you may nominate a specialist yourself. Without that agreement a bodyshop estimates at new-part prices, the estimate comes out above the agreed value and a total loss follows while the car could still have been saved.

The restrictions on use in a classic car scheme

Enthusiast cover usually assumes limited use: a maximum mileage, no commuting, no business journeys and storage in a dry, locked space. Those are not suggestions but policy conditions. If the car is being used outside those limits when it is damaged or stolen, the insurer can reduce the payout. If you use the car more widely, choose a mainstream policy; the difference in price does not outweigh a refused claim.

What a classic car policy by definition does not cover

Rust, failed paintwork, wear and material fatigue fall outside every cover; those are consequences of age and of maintenance. The same applies to mechanical and electrical faults, to damage during runs with an element of speed or manoeuvring, and to repair work that leaves the car in better condition than before the damage. If loss of value remains after a repair, that is in principle a claim against the other party.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Valued amount and the date of the report — The recorded value is the basis; an expired report takes you back to the market value.
  • Age of the vehicle — From a certain age a classic or youngtimer scheme comes into view with its own rating structure.
  • Agreed maximum mileage — Enthusiast cover works with a tight mileage cap that strongly affects the rate.
  • Storage and security — Dry, locked storage is often a binding condition of acceptance on cars like these.
  • Condition and originality — Documented maintenance, history and original parts count in both acceptance and valuation.
  • Availability of a second car — Insurers often ask whether there is a car for everyday use; that supports the limited use.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

Does this car qualify for classic car insurance?

On grounds of age, usually yes, but every insurer applies its own qualifying age and its own requirements as to use. If you drive limited mileage, keep the car indoors and have another car for everyday use, such a scheme fits. If you do not meet those requirements, choose a mainstream policy with a valuation clause rather than classic car cover.

What is the difference between market value and valued amount?

Market value is what the car was worth at the time of the damage according to the loss adjuster; he estimates it after the event. A valued amount is a figure a recognised valuer sets in advance and the insurer accepts. On a car with collector's value that makes a considerable difference, because there are too few comparable cars for sale on which to base a market value.

Is my car written off more quickly?

That risk exists if the estimate is based on new parts when those are no longer available. So agree in advance that used original parts may be used and that you may appoint a specialist. Also have it recorded that on a total loss you may buy back the remains, so that the car does not slip out of your hands.

Are rust or a failed turbo insured?

No. Rust, wear and mechanical or electrical faults are consequences of age and maintenance and fall outside every own-damage cover. Insurance pays for a sudden event from an external cause, such as fire, theft, storm or a collision. You remain responsible for the condition and the mechanicals yourself, even on a policy with a valued amount.
