Insurance through Hienfeld

Some risks do not fit a standard application screen. For those cases there are specialist parties that draw up a policy to measure, with their own acceptance and their own conditions.

  • Several insurers compared objectively
  • 9.5 customer rating for a new policy

In brief

Finass Advies is an independent intermediary and compares several insurers objectively. Hienfeld is one of the parties we work with and operates as an authorised agent: acceptance, drawing up the policy and handling claims are all done there, within the authority granted by an insurer carrying the risk. For you that means shorter lines where a risk calls for a tailored approach, and a policy that does not come from a fixed menu.

The range lies with risks that do not fit an ordinary policy. Think of an instrument insurance for musicians, a art insurance for a collection, a classic car, a pleasure craft or a second home abroad. On the business side it covers, among other things, drones, fraud and deception and cyber.

A specialist policy is not automatically a wider policy. What you buy is a description that fits the object: a valuation instead of a value calculator, an area of cover matching where the object is, and clauses on transport, storage and use. That calls for precise information from you. Exactly what is insured is set out in the policy conditions and on the policy schedule, and here those matter more than with any standard product.

This page deals with one situation. The full overview is on Compare construction all risks (CAR) insurance.

What to look out for

Four features of specialist policies that differ from an ordinary policy.

What working through an underwriting authority means

With an underwriting agent the administration lies with that party, while an insurer carries the risk. The policy schedule states who carries the risk; that matters for the question of whom to approach in a dispute. The complaints procedure and the route to the complaints institute are set out in the conditions and in our service guide.

A valuation instead of an estimate

With art, instruments, classic cars and collections a a valuation report from an expertis used. That fixes the value and prevents argument afterwards, within the limit set by Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code: a payment may not put you in a clearly better position. A valuation has a period of validity; once that expires, you fall back on market value.

Area of cover, storage and use

Specialist policies describe precisely where and how the object may be used and kept. An object kept somewhere other than declared, a vessel outside the sailing area or a classic car used daily for commuting falls outside the description. Almost every policy also has a sanctions clause: no cover in countries subject to international sanctions.

What is not insured here either

On a tailored policy too, intent and wilful recklessness (Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code), war risks and nuclear reactions and damage caused by wear, inherent defect or vermin remain excluded. The same applies to a fall in value through market developments and to damage during restoration or treatment. A specialist widens the description, not the law.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Nature of the object or risk: determines whether a tailored approach is needed
  • Agreed or evidenced value: the basis for the sum insured
  • Use: private, professional or on loan
  • Area of cover: the Netherlands, Europe or worldwide
  • Safekeeping and security: storage, alarm and climate control
  • Excess: often different for each type of event

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Why should I not simply take a standard policy?

If your situation fits within the standard description, that is fine and usually cheaper. It only pays to go elsewhere once a sub-limit, an area of cover or a provision on use starts to pinch. We set both versions side by side and show which exclusion makes the difference in your case, so that the choice does not rest on a product name.

Who am I insured with if I take out cover through an underwriting agent?

The contract is concluded with the insurer named on the policy schedule as carrying the risk. The underwriting agent acts on that insurer's behalf and handles acceptance and claims. Finass acts as intermediary and remains your point of contact for changes, renewal and claims. Keep the policy schedule, because it states who is responsible for what.

How often does a valuation have to be renewed?

That is set out in the conditions. A valuation is often valid for a number of years. Once that period expires the binding effect falls away and, if there is a claim, the value at the time of the event applies. For objects whose market value moves, revaluing in good time is the difference between a fixed amount and an argument.

Can I also put forward a risk that has been refused elsewhere?

You can. A refusal by one insurer says little about the possibilities at another, because acceptance policy differs widely. You must, however, report an earlier refusal or cancellation on a new application; that comes under the duty of disclosure in Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code. Concealing it leads to problems when you claim that are bigger than the refusal itself.
