Your own property · tools · overnight storage
Tools, materials and stock in your own van are legally not part of the vehicle and therefore fall outside the own-damage cover of the motor policy.

Own goods in transit insurance covers the things you carry yourself for your own use or for delivery to your customer: hand tools, machinery, measuring equipment, materials and stock. The motor policy insures the vehicle itself. If the side door is forced, the motor insurer pays for the bodywork and the lock; the contents of the load space are on this policy or nowhere.
The heart of this page is the valuation. You insure an amount you state yourself, and that amount has to match what it costs to buy everything again. An inventory with makes, types and serial numbers is the starting point for that and, when you claim, your supporting evidence at the same time. Anyone who insures for too little faces underinsurance and a proportionately lower payment.
You can read more about the conditions on which the cover applies — overnight storage, security, emptying the van — on carrying your own goods: what you need to know. If you carry other people's goods for payment, this policy is not the right one; in that case look at goods in transit.
The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.
What the cargo is actually worth.
What a carrier bears at most.
From limited to all risks.
What is covered
| Situation | Carriers' liability | Goods in transit |
|---|---|---|
| Damage from an accident, up to the weight limit | Yes | Yes |
| Damage above the weight limit | No | Yes |
| Theft of the cargo | Sometimes | Yes |
| Damage with no identifiable fault | No | Yes |
| Storage during the journey | No | Sometimes |
| Inherent defect or inadequate packaging | No | No |
This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.
Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.
Comprehensive cover on the company van insures the van: bodywork, glass, engine and fixed fittings. Loose items in the load space are not a component of the vehicle and are not included, not even when they are secured in a racking system. If the van is broken into, the repair of the door runs through the motor policy and the stolen contents through this insurance. Two policies, two claims, two excesses.
The book value of your tools says nothing about what you have to pay to be able to work again tomorrow. So calculate with the purchase price of new, comparable equipment and include batteries, measuring instruments and consumables. Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code provides that you never receive more than your actual loss, so insuring for too much achieves nothing; insuring for too little costs you part of the payment on every claim.
Not covered as standard are money and securities, personal property of your own or of your employees, and goods that belong to third parties and are in your care. Wear and tear, rust, deterioration and inherent defect of the equipment fall outside it as well, as does damage caused by items lying loose in the load space and knocking against each other. Securing the load is your responsibility, not the insurer's.
The statement you make when taking out the policy is the basis of the premium and of the cover; Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code obliges you to make that statement fully and correctly. If you start carrying expensive measuring, welding or inspection equipment, or the stock you have with you increases as a matter of course, let us know. An increase in risk that only comes to light after a claim leads to argument about the amount of the payment.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
The questions we are asked most often about this.
No. Own-damage or comprehensive cover insures the vehicle and the fixed fittings, not the loose items you carry in it. After a break-in the motor policy pays for the damaged lock and the door, while the stolen tools are only paid for if you have taken out own goods in transit insurance for them.
Own goods in transit insurance is about property that belongs to you and that you carry yourself. A goods in transit insurance is intended for cargo you carry for a client or that you have in transit as seller or buyer. The question of who owns the cargo determines which of the two you need.
Not automatically. The cover attaches to the carriage and to the vehicle; as soon as you leave things outside the van on a job or in a site hut, that is a different risk. Some policies have an extension for this with requirements as to locking and supervision. Ask about it expressly if you regularly leave materials on site.
Only if they have been declared. As standard the policy covers property that belongs to you; a hired breaker or borrowed measuring equipment belongs to someone else and comes under the provision on third-party property. If you regularly hire in equipment, say so when taking out the policy so that the cover is adjusted accordingly.
