In brief

The vehicle part is governed by law. Article 2 WAM requires every keeper of a motor vehicle to hold liability insurance as long as the vehicle can take part in traffic, even where it stands idle for months. On top of that you choose third-party, fire and theft or comprehensive yourself. Because a motorhome covers few kilometres at a high value, comprehensive remains defensible for longer here than on a passenger car.

The contents part follows its own rules. Crockery, bedding, clothing, camping furniture, bicycles and equipment do not fall under the vehicle's own-damage value but under a separate sum insured, with its own limits and its own exclusions. Money, jewellery and valuable equipment are often capped or excluded, and theft without signs of forced entry is not paid.

The third element is travel abroad. The territorial scope of the liability cover is set out on the green card, while the assistance cover can have its own territory. Check both before you leave. The claims profile differs per make and model; see for instance insuring a van conversion or Insuring a Hymer.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

The liability cover is not optional

Article 2 WAM ties the insurance obligation to the registration, not to the use. A motorhome that stands on a site all winter but can go on the road has to be insured. The only way to make that obligation lapse is suspension with the RDW (the Dutch vehicle authority); the vehicle may then not stand on the public road. Driving during a suspension produces both a fine and a cover problem.

The contents are assessed differently from the vehicle

A separate sum insured and a separate set of conditions apply to the contents. Theft is only paid where there are demonstrable signs of forced entry, and separate limits or an exclusion apply to money, jewellery, phones and laptops. Belongings outside the vehicle, for instance under the awning or in the porch tent, fall entirely outside the cover on many policies. Take photographs before you leave and keep purchase invoices for the more expensive items.

The territorial scope is set out on the green card

The green card states the countries for which the liability cover applies; country codes that are crossed out do not count. The own-damage cover and the assistance cover can apply a different territory from the liability cover. If you travel outside the European Union, for instance to Morocco or Turkey, check all three separately and arrange additional cover if necessary at the border or in advance through your broker.

Report a claim in good time and in full

Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code requires you to report a claim as soon as you reasonably can and to give the insurer all the information relevant to the assessment. Anyone who reports late and thereby harms the insurer's interests risks a reduction in the payment; anyone who deliberately gives incorrect information loses the right to payment. Damage you caused intentionally or through recklessness is excluded under Article 7:952 DCC.

Frost damage is your own responsibility

Draining the water or maintaining a minimum temperature is a condition on virtually every policy. Burst pipes and a boiler damaged by frost are not sudden external damage but the result of an omission, and are therefore not paid for.

Hire is a different product

If you hire out the motorhome, even occasionally through a platform, that is commercial use and it is excluded on an ordinary policy. Platform cover usually applies only during the hire period; check what applies between two hires and what the hirer's excess is.

Hire and insurance

What does your premium depend on?

  • Type of cover chosen — Liability only, third-party fire and theft or comprehensive.
  • Value and weight of the vehicle — The basis of calculation for the own-damage part of the premium.
  • Sum insured for the contents — A separate amount alongside the value of the motorhome.
  • Area of cover — Europe or wider, and whether the assistance cover follows the same territory.
  • Where it is kept out of season — The place where most damage while standing idle arises.
  • No-claims years built up — Often transferable from another motor vehicle insurance.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

Do I have to insure it while the motorhome stands idle?

Yes. Article 2 WAM ties the insurance obligation to the registration and not to the use, so as long as the vehicle can take part in traffic there has to be liability cover. Only suspension with the RDW lifts that obligation, and the motorhome may then not stand or be driven on the public road. You usually keep the own-damage cover in place.

Are the contents of the porch tent insured?

On many policies they are not. The contents cover as a rule applies to belongings in the locked motorhome, and what stands outside under the awning or in the porch tent falls outside it. Theft is also only paid where there are demonstrable signs of forced entry. Read what location wording your conditions use and what limits apply to bicycles and equipment.

Does my policy apply in Morocco or Turkey?

You can read that from the green card: country codes crossed out fall outside the liability cover. Note that the own-damage cover and the assistance module can have their own territorial scope, differing from that of the liability cover. Check all three before you leave and arrange additional cover if necessary, in advance or at the border.

How quickly do I have to report a claim?

As soon as you reasonably can; that follows from Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code. You have to give all the information relevant to the assessment. If you report late and the insurer's interests are harmed as a result, the payment can be reduced. Where information is deliberately misleading, the right to payment lapses entirely.
