In brief

You insure the car in your own name or in the name of the business. For a sole trader that makes little difference to liability, but it does to the no-claims years: in the business's name they are held in the name of the business.

Declare the actual use. If you cover considerably more kilometres for business than a private motorist, that belongs in the declaration; too low a declared mileage is a point of discussion after a loss.

What this policy does not cover is your own loss of income when an accident stops you working. As a self-employed professional you cannot rely on a client's obligation to insure.

Independent, personal, sorted quickly

We compare your car insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Your own injury is not included

If you are injured on the road while working, the motor policy covers the other party's loss but not your loss of income. Unlike employees, you cannot rely on an employer's obligation to insure. The Supreme Court rejected that argument from a self-employed professional in September 2021. That needs disability insurance (AOV).

Disability insurance (AOV)

In the business's name or private

For a sole trader there is no separation between business and private assets, so for liability it makes little difference. For the no-claims years it does: in the business's name the business builds them up, and when it ends you cannot simply take them over to a private policy.

What you carry falls outside it

A laptop, measuring equipment, tools or samples in the boot are not covered on the motor policy. Your own goods need a goods in transit insurance of your own, with requirements about where the vehicle is kept outside working hours.

Own goods in transit insurance

Declare business mileage honestly

A self-employed professional who drives to clients daily covers considerably more kilometres than the average private motorist. Declare that. Too low a declared mileage brings the premium down but is a ground for discussion about the accuracy of your declaration after a loss.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

For liability that makes little difference for a sole trader. For the no-claims years it does: in the business's name they are held in the name of the business.

Is my laptop in the car insured?

No. Your own goods need a goods in transit insurance of your own, with requirements about where the vehicle is kept outside working hours.

Do I have to declare business use?

Yes, including the actual mileage. Too low a declaration is a point of discussion after a loss.
