In brief
Finass is an adviser and broker. We do not underwrite anything ourselves, but set the offerings of several insurers side by side and choose on the basis of the cover you need. Assicuro is one of them. Which insurer it becomes follows from what you want to insure and on what conditions, not from a preference set in advance.
What stands out in the business we place through Assicuro is that it concerns items whose value is not fixed as standard: a exclusive car, a car collection, or valuables and home contents in the higher segment. With items like these, the question is not whether there is cover, but what amount the insurer pays on a total loss.
That is where the main point of attention lies. Under Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code , a general insurance policy pays no more than the loss actually suffered; you must not be better off as a result. A a valuation beforehand carried out by an expert fixes that value, so that after a loss there is no argument about market value. Without a valuation the expert assesses the value only afterwards, and by then the car is no longer there to be examined.
This page deals with one situation. The full overview is on Compare car insurance.
What to look out for
Four things we go through with you in advance if a policy is placed with Assicuro.
Establishing the value before anything happens
A valuation report from a recognised expert is in principle binding on both parties. Note the period of validity: if the report expires, you fall back on market value. For items that rise in value, periodic revaluation is not a formality but the difference between two widely differing outcomes.
Security and storage are conditions, not suggestions
For higher values the insurer almost always sets requirements for the alarm grade, key management and where the item is kept. Those requirements appear as clause on the policy schedule. If they are not met at the time of a theft, the insurer may refuse or reduce the payout.
Tell the whole story when you apply
Claims history, earlier refusals, a criminal record and the actual use must all be put on the table. The duty of disclosure under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code is strict, and Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code governs what happens if it turns out afterwards that something was withheld: from a reduced payout to no payout at all.
What is excluded in any event
Excluded are intent and recklessness (Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code), taking part in races, time trials and track days, and hire or use for payment, including through a sharing platform. Wear and tear, mechanical breakdown and defects that appear without any external cause are also not insured events.
What does your premium depend on?
- Valued or declared amount — the basis for the own-damage premium
- Number of items on one policy — a collection is assessed differently from a single car
- Storage address and security — a locked Garage or the public road makes a considerable difference
- Use and annual mileage — daily driving counts more heavily than occasional use
- Circle of drivers — the age and experience of everyone allowed to drive it
- Excess — a higher excess lowers the premium
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.
What is covered
| Situation | At Finass Verzekert | With the provider |
|---|---|---|
| The security and storage clauses are on the table before you sign | Yes | Yes |
| You are told in advance whether a valuation report is needed and how long it remains valid | Yes | Provided that |
| Your car collection is spread over two addresses and that has to fit the acceptance criteria | Yes | No |
| The application is declined and an insurer is found that will take the risk | Yes | No |
| After a theft is reported, someone liaises with the insurer about the file | Yes | No |
| You are warned before the valuation report expires | Yes | No |
For items with no reference market, establishing the value in advance is the point at which the two routes diverge.
Frequently asked questions
The questions we are asked most often about this.
Can I go to Assicuro directly?
We act as brokers; the policy is concluded between you and the insurer. Our role is to compare conditions, request quotations and support you when you report a claim. Whether Assicuro is the best choice for your situation only becomes clear after we have set the offerings of several insurers side by side.
What is the difference between market value and agreed value?
Market value is what a comparable item was worth at the time of the loss, established by an expert after the event. Agreed value is an amount determined in advance by an expert and stated on the policy. For unusual or rare items that makes a big difference, because there is no reference market from which a market value readily follows.
Do I have to report a claim straight away?
Yes. Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code requires you to inform the insurer as soon as you are reasonably aware of the loss, and to cooperate with the investigation. Do not wait until you have a repair quotation. In the event of theft you must also report it to the police; that report is almost always a condition for the insurer to deal with the claim.
Does anything change if I use the item less?
Tell us. A lower mileage or a different place of storage may affect the premium, but what matters more is that the policy schedule reflects reality. Changes in use, drivers or address should be reported, because the insurer based the cover on those details.
