Insuring a Caterpillar

With Caterpillar plant, the policy turns on two things the insurer holds you to: the security you have declared and the sum insured, which has to keep pace with the replacement price.

In brief

Caterpillar builds across almost the whole range of earthmoving, from compact tracked excavators to heavy dozers and wheeled loaders. That means high object values and a machine that can be used and sold anywhere in the world. Insurers translate that into prevention requirements: a tracker with a live subscription, an immobiliser or PIN, and agreements about storage. Those requirements are not advice but a condition of the policy.

The second point to watch is the sum insured. With plant that holds its value relatively well, the amount set on a policy years ago is often no longer the price you pay today for an equivalent machine. If the declared sum lags behind the actual replacement value, underinsurance arises and even a partial loss is paid proportionately.

The flip side of the dense dealer network is welcome when you have a claim: parts and specialist repair are readily available, which limits downtime after an insured loss. Maintenance and overhaul remain at your own expense. A policy pays for damage, not for wear.

What is covered

SituationCovered
Theft from the building siteSometimes
Fire and storm damageYes
Inherent defect in the hydraulicsSometimes
Damage to cables and pipesSometimes
Normal wear and tracksNo
Damage due to deferred maintenanceNo

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Sum insured and basis of valuation. Replacement value as new, market value, or a depreciation scheme with an age limit.
  • Machine class and operating weight. Heavier plant means higher repair costs and greater consequential loss.
  • Required security measures. Tracker with a live subscription, immobiliser and PIN or coded key.
  • Storage and site security. Where the machine stands outside working hours and how that site is screened off.
  • Maintenance regime. A current service contract with fixed intervals limits disputes about wear.
  • Excess per event. A higher excess lowers the premium but shifts small losses onto you.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Security is a condition, not a recommendation

If a tracker, immobiliser or locked storage is declared on the application, the insurer records that as a condition. If it emerges after a theft that the subscription had been cancelled or that the machine was standing elsewhere, the facts have been misrepresented. Articles 7:928 and 7:930 DCC govern what then happens to the payout: where an incorrect declaration would have altered acceptance, the compensation may be reduced or lapse entirely.

Measuring the sum insured against today's replacement price

A policy drawn up years ago often still carries the old purchase value. If the actual replacement value is now higher, the insurer reduces the payout proportionately, even for a loss far smaller than the value of the machine. Have the sum reviewed periodically and record which basis of value applies: replacement value as new, market value, or a depreciation scheme with an age limit. Each of those bases leads to a different payout for the same loss.

Telematics helps with recovery, not with cover

A tracking system reduces the chance that a stolen machine disappears and is therefore valued at acceptance. It does not replace the question of cover. If the machine is recovered damaged, the ordinary own-damage assessment applies, including the excess. After a theft, insurers ask for the history from the system; if it is missing because the subscription was not active, that weakens your case considerably. Make sure the data can also be transferred on sale.

Damage yes, maintenance and wear no

With heavy machines the largest invoices are often maintenance invoices: undercarriage, engine overhaul, driveline. Those fall outside any own-damage cover. Insurers pay for a sudden, unforeseen event, not for gradual deterioration. Damage resulting from deferred maintenance or from continuing to use the machine after a fault warning is also refused. Keep service reports; they determine which side of the dividing line your claim falls.

Repairs and parts

Parts are quickly available, which limits downtime after a loss.

Acceptance differs per insurer

Not every company applies the same policy for this make. With unusual versions, the question is not what it costs but who will accept it.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

What happens if my tracker subscription has expired?

If the tracker was declared on the application, it counts as a condition of the policy. An expired subscription means you do not meet the agreed security. The insurer can then reduce or refuse the payout after a theft, relying on Articles 7:928 and 7:930 DCC. So always report changes to the security straight away.

How do I know whether my sum insured is still correct?

Compare the amount on the policy with what you would pay today for an equivalent machine. If the replacement value is higher, there is underinsurance and even a partial loss is paid proportionately. Have the sum reviewed periodically, certainly after the equipment has been modified or extra features have been added to the machine.

Is a defective engine or pump insured?

Only if inherent defect or machinery breakdown is included and the event was sudden. Gradual deterioration, wear and the consequences of deferred maintenance fall outside. If you keep working after a fault warning and greater damage results, that is treated as avoidable and the extra part remains at your expense.

Why does the insurer ask for my service reports?

To establish whether the damage occurred suddenly or was the end of a longer process. In practice, the distinction between covered damage and uncovered wear is decided by the maintenance history. A complete file with intervals, work carried out and parts replaced strengthens your position considerably in borderline cases.
