Corvette insurance: acceptance and value on import

With a Corvette it is not the type of cover that matters but three questions: on what value a claim will be paid, what security the insurer requires and how many kilometres you drive.

In brief

Insurers place a Corvette in a category of its own. The power in relation to the weight is high, most examples in the Netherlands are imported and the value rarely follows neatly from a price guide. That has two consequences. Not every insurer accepts the car, and those that do often impose requirements on the driver's age, on the number of no-claims years and on security. So it is not a matter of looking for the lowest premium, but of finding the right insurer.

The most important arrangement is the determination of value. Under a standard policy the insurer pays market value on a total loss, determined using the usual guides. For a C3 or C4 with a restoration history, or for a recent C7 or C8 with particular equipment, that produces a figure that has little to do with the market. A a valuation report from a recognised expert fixes the value for the period stated in the policy; under Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code the insurer cannot rely on a lower value within that period.

The third consideration is use. If you only drive the car in the good season and it is otherwise in locked storage, a policy with limited mileage or a youngtimer arrangement comes into view, often with a lower premium and a valuation as the basis. There are conditions attached: a maximum number of kilometres per year, a second car for daily use and sometimes a storage requirement.

What you select on with a Corvette

The cover is almost always comprehensive. The difference lies in value, security and use.

The value

Valuation in advance

An expert report fixes the value, so that market value does not become a matter of argument.

  • Basis in Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code
  • Restoration work and options taken into account
  • Valid for the period stated in the policy
  • Schedule a revaluation in good time
The risk

Security and storage

Insurers impose requirements on the alarm, the tracking system and where the car is kept.

  • An approved system with an active subscription
  • Often a requirement of locked storage
  • Key management counts in the event of theft
  • Notify a change of address straight away
The use

Mileage and season

Limited use lowers the premium, but ties you to conditions.

  • Maximum number of kilometres per year
  • Sometimes a second car is required
  • Minimum age of the driver
  • Winter storage may count

What is covered

SituationThird-party liabilityComprehensive cover with an agreed value
Damage you cause to someone elseYesYes
Theft, fire and storm damageNoYes
Payment on a value agreed in advanceNoYes
Theft without the required trackerNoNo
Damage above the agreed mileageYesProvided that
Damage during a track day or drag raceNoNo

What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) that you receive before you take out cover.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Power and year of construction: a C3 differs greatly from a C8
  • Agreed value: the basis of calculation for the policy
  • Security class: alarm and tracker
  • Where it is kept and the postcode area: the risk of theft differs per location
  • Mileage and seasonal use: limited use lowers the premium
  • Age and no-claims years: often a condition of acceptance

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

What makes the difference with this model

Four points that count for more with a Corvette than with an average car.

Power determines acceptance, not just the premium

A big V8 in a light body falls into a high premium group, but the real sticking point comes earlier: some insurers accept this type of car only above a certain driver age or from a minimum number of no-claims years. Give the exact version, the year of construction and the power output and declare any second driver. An application based on the model name is almost always adjusted at final assessment.

With imports, establishing the value is the most sensitive point

Many Corvettes in the Netherlands come from the United States. The specification, options and original list price therefore differ from any Dutch reference, so that price guides systematically come out too low. Have the car obtaining a valuation before the policy starts and record how long that value applies; once the period expires, you fall back on market value.

What is not covered

Even under the widest policy these items stay outside the cover: driving on a circuit and taking part in speed, drag or skill events, even where it is offered as a touring run; wear and tear and mechanical or electronic defects without a collision, such as engine or transmission damage; and hire or use for payment, for example for wedding hire, without express consent. Theft cover also lapses if the prescribed security is missing, and for intent and recklessness Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code.

Report modifications and use

A supercharger, a different exhaust, modified suspension or wider wheels change the risk and the value. Declare them before the modification and have them included in the valuation; otherwise they are not covered on a total loss. When you take out the policy the duty of disclosure of Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code and a breach can reduce or void the payout (Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Codeapplies). If you consistently drive more kilometres than agreed, tell us. Report a claim as soon as reasonably possible (Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code).

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Can I insure a Corvette on a youngtimer or classic car policy?

Once the car reaches a certain age, many insurers allow that. Conditions come with it: a maximum number of kilometres per year, a second car for daily use, a minimum driver age and sometimes a storage requirement. In return the premium is lower and the car is more often insured at an agreed value rather than market value.

Is a track day or a drag strip covered?

No. Driving on a circuit and taking part in speed or drag events fall outside virtually every motor policy, even where no times are recorded. If you want to do it anyway, separate temporary cover is needed. Do not assume it without written confirmation from the insurer. A verbal assurance will not stand up when you claim.

What happens when the valuation period expires?

The agreed value then lapses and the insurer pays market value on a total loss. In a rising market that can mean a considerable difference. So have the car revalued in good time and keep the report with the policy. At the revaluation, also include restoration work carried out and options fitted, provided these have been declared to the insurer.

What security does the insurer require?

Usually an approved alarm system combined with a vehicle tracking system with an active subscription, with the required grade rising with the value. Sometimes a storage requirement is added. These requirements appear as conditions in the policy: if they are not met, theft is not covered. Ask about the requirement before you buy, because fitting and inspection take time.

Does a modification to the engine count?

Yes. An increase in power output is an increase in risk which you must declare in advance. Some insurers accept it against a loading, others decline the car. If you carry it out without declaring it, the insurer may reduce or refuse the payout under Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code. Also have the modification included in the valuation, otherwise it does not count on a total loss.
