In brief

A compact SUV from a premium make sits in an in-between position: the size is modest, but the list price and the repair costs are higher than on an ordinary car of the same length. Insurers classify cars by list price, weight, power and the model's average claims cost. For the Q1 that usually means a mid-range classification, with a premium that depends more on your postcode, mileage and no-claims years than on the model itself.

Third-party liability cover is required by law under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM) and pays only for damage you cause to someone else. Damage to the Q1 itself falls under own-damage cover: third-party, fire and theft for a fixed list of events such as theft, glass, fire, storm and collision with an animal, and comprehensive cover for damage you cause yourself and damage with no other party too. On a car often parked in town, parking damage with no known culprit is the argument that often justifies comprehensive cover.

When you apply, always ask for a premium on the registration number and exact version. On a model that has not been on the Dutch market long, the model designation is sometimes not yet fully in the rating systems. An application based on 'Q model' then produces a premium that does not hold up when you claim. Also state whether the car is used privately or partly for business and who the main driver is.

Which cover suits a Q1?

Three types of cover, with the situations that most often arise on a compact SUV beneath them.

Compulsory

Third-party liability

The legally required cover for damage you cause to others.

  • Damage to other cars and injury
  • No cover for your own Q1
  • Compulsory under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM)
  • Suited to an older, fully depreciated car
Intermediate option

Third-party liability + fire and theft

As well as third-party liability, a fixed list of events: theft, glass, fire, storm and collision with animals.

  • Theft and burglary damage
  • Windscreen damage and windscreen replacement
  • Fire, storm and hail damage
  • Your own fault remains at your own expense
Most chosen

Comprehensive

Also damage to your own car caused by you or without a third party involved.

  • Single-vehicle collisions and parking damage
  • Damage with no known other party
  • Often a replacement value as new or purchase price arrangement
  • You can choose your own excess

What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) that you receive before you take out cover.

What makes the difference on the Q1

Four points that come up more often with this model than with an average compact car.

Small car, not small repair costs

The size says little about the bill. The bumper, mirrors and windscreen contain parking sensors, cameras and radar. After a windscreen or bumper skin is replaced, those systems have to be calibratedagain, and that is done by a marque specialist. Damage that occurs in a car park and looks insignificant can therefore cost several times the difference in premium between third-party, fire and theft and comprehensive cover.

Ask for the premium on the registration number, not the model name

Insurers work from the exact model designation in the vehicle register. Versions within one model range differ in list price, power and weight and can therefore fall into different premium classes. If you enter the wrong or too general a version, the premium is wrong and the insurer can rely on Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Codewhen you claim. After taking out the policy, check that the registration number on the policy schedule matches the one on the registration document.

What is not covered

The following, among others, are outside the cover: taking part in speed or skill trials and driving on a track, even on a touring run; wear and tear and mechanical or electronic defects without a collision, such as a failed transmission or a worn battery pack; damage while driving without a valid driving licence or under the influence; and damage during hire or paid passenger transport where that has not been declared. Separate wheel and tyre damage is only paid for where it results from a covered event. Damage caused by intent or recklessness is excluded under Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code.

Declaring accessories, security and changes

A towbar, roof rack, different wheels, an audio installation or navigation fitted afterwards all belong on the policy. A house move, a different annual mileage or a different main driver also change the risk. When the policy is taken out, the duty of disclosure applies under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code; a breach can reduce the payout or cause it to lapse (Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code). If the car has keyless entry, ask whether the insurer requires additional security. You report a claim as soon as reasonably possible (Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code).

What does your premium depend on?

  • List price and trim level: determines the premium class
  • No-claims years: these determine your discount step
  • Age of the regular driver: young drivers weigh heavily
  • Postcode area: the risk of theft and damage
  • Number of kilometres per year: more kilometres, higher premium
  • Type of cover and excess: third-party liability, third-party, fire and theft, or comprehensive

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Is a Q1 more expensive to insure than an ordinary hatchback?

Usually slightly dearer. The list price of a premium SUV is higher and the repair costs of bumpers, lighting and sensors mount up faster. The difference is smaller than on the S and RS versions, because power is not a heavy factor on this car. How much it differs varies from insurer to insurer; comparing pays off.

How long does comprehensive cover remain sensible?

For as long as you are unwilling or unable to bear the damage to the car yourself. On a Q1, repairing a bumper with sensors soon costs more than the annual difference in premium against third-party, fire and theft. Assess it each year against the market value, your excess and your reserves rather than against a fixed age limit.

What if the car has been imported?

Declare that when you apply. On an imported example the specification and the original list price sometimes differ from the Dutch reference, which affects the premium and the way the value is set after a claim. Make sure the details on the registration document and the policy schedule match before you start driving.

Does business use count?

Yes. If you also drive the car for your business, or several people use it regularly, report it. Driving on a private policy while the car is used for business is an increase in risk that the insurer can raise against you when you claim. For delivery or transport services a separate policy almost always applies.

What does a towbar do to my cover?

The towbar itself is an accessory you declare. What matters more is that damage to a trailer or caravan is not covered by your car policy. That needs its own insurance. Damage you cause to someone else with the trailer is usually covered by the towing car's third-party cover while you are driving.

Do I lose no-claims years on glass damage?

On glass repair and glass replacement, usually not. These are own-damage claims that most insurers keep outside the bonus-malus scheme. Where the glass is repaired rather than replaced, the excess is often waived entirely. Check this policy by policy, because the treatment of glass damage differs from insurer to insurer.

Would you like a premium for your Q1?

Ask for a no-obligation quote using the registration number. We compare both the premium and the conditions for this version.
