Liability
- Covered while coupled
- Under the car's third-party liability cover
- Uncoupled: no longer covered
A private trailer is on the road a few weekends a year and stands still for the other eleven months. It is exactly that standing still that determines the cover you need.

As long as the trailer is behind the car, liability runs with the third-party liability cover of the towing vehicle. Damage to the trailer itself is never included there, and as soon as you uncouple, that liability cover falls away too. From that moment the trailer is a loose object without a policy, usually on your own driveway.
Do not assume the home insurance will absorb this. Buildings and home contents policies exclude motor vehicles and trailers. A trailer that disappears from behind the shed falls outside them. Own-damage cover of your own pays for damage and theft, almost always subject to the requirement of an approved coupling lock and a declared storage location.
Not covered: the load, driving without the correct entitlement, wear to tyres, brakes and the drawbar, and theft from a location other than the one you declared. If you use the trailer for business, look instead at the version for self-employed professionals.
We compare your trailer insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

A trailer or caravan is not an independent motor vehicle and therefore has no insurance requirement of its own. Damage you cause to others with it falls under the third-party liability cover of the towing vehicle, as long as the combination is coupled (Article 2 WAM). Once the trailer is uncoupled and has come to a standstill, that cover no longer applies.
This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
We look at the terms as well as the premium, and stay your point of contact when there is a claim.
We are not tied to one insurer and compare on the basis of an objective analysis of several companies.
You call or email someone who knows your file. No menu options, no changing call centres.
We cancel your old policy and align the start date, so you are never a day without cover.
We report the claim and monitor how it is handled. In urgent cases you can reach us on the emergency line.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.
A box trailer, boat trailer or flatbed is used a handful of times a year and stands beside the house or behind the shed for the rest of the year. That is also where it is stolen, uncoupled and without witnesses. Insurers therefore tie theft cover to the declared storage address and to an approved lock. If the actual location differs from that, it is grounds for limiting the payout after a theft.
If your neighbour borrows the trailer for a trip to the recycling centre, liability for damage to other people runs through the third-party liability cover of are car, not through yours. If he damages the trailer itself, that comes back to your own-damage cover, including the excess and the effect on your claims record. Record who is towing and agree in advance who bears the excess.
The boat on the trailer, the horse in the trailer, the bicycles, the removal boxes and the garden waste are not part of the trailer policy. For a boat there is pleasure craft insurance, for a horse there is separate cover, and for household goods the away from home cover of your home contents insurance applies, with limits of its own. Fixed bodywork such as a cover, drawbar box, jockey wheel and loading ramps also counts only if you declare it with a value.
From 750 kilos maximum permitted mass the trailer must be registered, and the combination of car and trailer may exceed the limit of a category B licence; BE or code 96 is then required. Driving without that entitlement is grounds for exclusion. Under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM) the other party will still be compensated, but the insurer will then recover that amount from you in full.
What you carry (tools, materials, a motorbike, a boat) is not covered under the trailer policy. For that you need separate goods in transit insurance, with requirements of its own for overnight storage.
From 750 kilos the trailer must be registered, and the combination of car and trailer may exceed the limit of a category B licence. Driving without the correct entitlement is grounds for exclusion: including for the third-party damage the insurer pays to the other party and then recovers from you.
This is what people ask us most.
Only for liability, and only while it is coupled to the towing vehicle. Damage to the trailer itself is never covered, and as soon as you uncouple, that liability cover falls away too. For theft from the driveway or damage while it is in storage you need separate own-damage cover; buildings and home contents insurance expressly exclude trailers.
Liability for damage to other people then runs through the third-party liability cover of that person's car. Your own-damage cover continues to apply to damage to the trailer itself, including where the borrower causes it, with an excess and consequences for your claims record. Agree in advance who pays that excess, and report the lending if it happens regularly.
No. The trailer policy covers the chassis and the declared fixed bodywork, not what you carry. A boat needs pleasure craft insurance and that policy must also cover transport by road. A horse needs cover of its own. With both, check whether carriage on a trailer is expressly included and what requirements apply to securing the load.
Look at the territorial limits on the policy schedule. These usually match the countries on the green card of the towing vehicle. Report longer stays and pay attention to the theft conditions: at a campsite or hotel car park the storage differs from the address you declared, and it is precisely there that the requirement of a coupling lock applies in full.
