In brief

Finass acts as an intermediary with more than thirty insurers and is tied to none of them. Klaverblad has both a private line and a business line, covering motor vehicles, the home, liability and legal expenses. Which insurer ultimately carries your policy follows from the cover you need and from your acceptance profile, not from a preference decided in advance.

The most important moment of any insurance lies with the application. Under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code you have to report everything you understand to be relevant to the assessment: your claims history, an earlier cancellation or refusal by another insurer, a criminal record within the period asked about and, for a business, the actual activities. Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code determines what happens if that is not correct: the insurer may reduce or entirely refuse the payment, depending on what it would have done had the information been correct.

Alongside the cover, the policy schedule often shows clauses: a security requirement, an inspection of the electrical installation, a requirement about where a vehicle is kept or about where keys are stored. Such clauses are not recommendations but conditions of cover. We go through them with you when the policy is taken out and check at renewal whether they still match reality, because a clause that fitted three years ago and no longer does costs money when you claim.

This page deals with one situation. The full overview is on Insuring a light quadricycle (brommobiel).

The same independent view, whatever insurer

We work with dozens of insurers and choose whichever fits your situation best — not whichever pays us the most. That means advice built around you, not around one brand.

Why arrange it through Finass Verzekert?

We look at the terms as well as the premium, and stay your point of contact when there is a claim.

Independent

We are not tied to one insurer and compare on the basis of an objective analysis of several companies.

One fixed adviser

You call or email someone who knows your file. No menu options, no changing call centres.

Switching without hassle

We cancel your old policy and align the start date, so you are never a day without cover.

Help with claims

We report the claim and monitor how it is handled. In urgent cases you can reach us on the emergency line.

What to look out for

Four matters that apply at every insurer and that you have in your own hands.

Conditions take precedence over product names

Two policies with the same name can differ widely in the valuation arrangement, the excess and in how unusual situations are handled. With motor vehicles it is about depreciation and market value, with the home about replacement value as new and underinsurance. So compare on the conditions and not on the name of the cover. The difference in price is usually smaller than the difference in conditions.

Reporting changes in the meantime

A refurbishment, a new occupation, letting part of your home, working from home or a second vehicle changes the risk. Report it as soon as it arises. If a increase in risk only becomes visible after a claim, the argument about the payment is hard to win, and with motor vehicles an insurer can also rely on the WAM to recover what it has paid.

Premium payment and suspension of cover

If you do not pay the premium, the cover can be suspendedafter a reminder. With motor vehicles a suspension works through into the registration at the RDW and leads to a fine, even if the vehicle is standing still. The risk is also that if there is a claim in the intervening period you receive nothing while the premium debt remains.

What is excluded on almost every policy

Outside the cover is damage caused by intent or wilful recklessness under Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code, war risks and nuclear reactions, flooding because a primary flood defence fails, and wear, slow-acting influences and deferred maintenance. Administrative fines and traffic fines are never insured, because a penalty is not compensation for loss.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Cover chosen: the extent of the cover determines the basis of the premium
  • Excess: a higher excess lowers the premium but raises your share of a claim
  • Claims history: earlier claims count in the acceptance and the rate
  • Postcode: decisive for cover sensitive to theft and burglary
  • Number of policies: a package can give a discount on all the sections
  • Method of payment: paying in instalments normally costs more than paying annually

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Does Finass always advise the same insurer?

No. We compare the offerings of several insurers objectively and the outcome differs from application to application. The order is always the same: first establish which risks you run and which cover goes with them, then compare the conditions and only then the premium. On one application Klaverblad comes out as the best choice, on another a different party does.

What does an adviser do when there is a claim?

We report the claim, keep track of the time limits and speak to the insurer or the loss adjuster on your behalf. Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code requires you to report a claim in good time and to cooperate with the investigation. We make sure those obligations are met and that any refusal is tested against the policy conditions before you accept it.

Can an insurer refuse me?

Yes. Insurers apply acceptance guidelines and can refuse an application or accept it only on additional conditions, for example after a series of claims, with an unusual risk or after an earlier cancellation. Always report an earlier refusal; concealing it is precisely the situation for which Articles 7:928 and 7:930 DCC were written.

How do I cancel a current policy?

Most non-life policies can be cancelled on any day after the first year with one month's notice. Only cancel once the new policy has actually been accepted, so that no day is left without cover. With a motor vehicle that is extra important, because the insurance obligation under Article 2 WAM allows no interruption.
