Insuring a Doosan

Doosan machines now go by the name Develon, and that makes the question of how your machine appears on the policy, and who pays for a manufacturing fault, a practical one.

In brief

The brand name has changed. The machines have stayed the same. In insurance files that creates a muddle: a policy in the name of Doosan, a purchase invoice saying Develon and a loss report with yet another designation. So work with the serial or chassis number as the leading identification. That number is what a loss adjuster, the police and the insurer use in a theft or total loss. The brand name is administration.

The second theme with this make is inherent defect. Machines in this segment are often resold as young used plant, so the factory warranty has frequently already expired. If something then breaks from the inside, the question is whether your policy includes inherent defect or covers only damage from outside. That difference determines whether a cracked boom structure or a burnt-out control unit is your bill.

Finally, pay attention to where the machine comes from. A machine bought outside the official import channel can be identical, but with different warranty arrangements and a different route for parts. Declare that origin when you apply.

What is covered

SituationCovered
Theft from the building siteSometimes
Fire and storm damageYes
Inherent defect in the hydraulicsSometimes
Damage to cables and pipesSometimes
Normal wear and tracksNo
Damage due to deferred maintenanceNo

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Type and serial number as registered. A clear description of the object prevents disputes in a theft or total loss.
  • Origin of the machine. Supplied through the official import channel or outside it, with different warranty arrangements.
  • Cover for inherent defect. Comprehensive own-damage cover including inherent defect costs more than limited perils cover.
  • Year of manufacture and remaining warranty. While the factory warranty runs, part of the risk lies with the supplier.
  • Operating hours and maintenance records. A complete service file separates covered damage from excluded wear.
  • Arrangements for repair. Brand-affiliated or independent workshop, and the use of original parts.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Put the serial number first, not the brand name

A change of name produces policies on which the object is no longer clearly identified. Check that the policy shows the full type, the year of manufacture and the serial number, and that these match the plate on the machine. In a theft, that number is the only means by which the machine is identified. A discrepancy between the policy and the machine leads to delay and, if the insurer cannot identify the object, to a dispute about cover.

Inherent defect: included or not

Comprehensive own-damage cover also pays for damage whose cause lies in the machine itself: material, design or casting faults. Limited cover does not and pays only for external perils such as fire, storm and theft. Ask which version you have. Even in the comprehensive form, the defective part itself is often not paid for, although the consequential damage it causes to the rest of the machine is.

Recovery first, then the policy

If there really is a manufacturing fault, the producer can be held liable for it under Article 6:185 DCC, alongside the ordinary warranty and sale arrangements with the supplier. Insurers exclude damage that a third party must pay under contract or by law. So keep the contract of sale, the warranty terms and the delivery conditions with the machine. Only once the warranty period has expired, or the fault cannot be traced to the manufacturer, does the policy come into play.

Repair outside the brand network

Insurers have a say in where and how repairs are carried out. If you have work done at an independent workshop or with non-original parts, that can affect the payment and any warranties still running. Damage arising from an earlier faulty repair or from a modification to the machine not approved by the manufacturer is excluded. So agree the method of repair and the choice of parts before the workshop starts.

Repairs and parts

The dealer network is more limited; expect longer delivery times for specialist parts.

Acceptance differs per insurer

Not every company applies the same policy for this make. With unusual versions, the question is not what it costs but who will accept it.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Do I have to change my policy now that the make is called Develon?

The cover does not change because of a change of name, but do check that the object is clearly described. Make sure the type, year of manufacture and serial number on the policy match the plate on the machine. In a theft or total loss, that number is what is worked with; a different brand designation causes delay at most, a missing serial number causes real problems.

Is a boom broken by a welding fault covered?

That depends on the form of cover. Only comprehensive own-damage cover including inherent defect pays for damage whose cause lies in the machine itself. The defective part itself is often not paid for, but the consequential damage to the rest of the machine is. With a demonstrable manufacturing fault, the insurer will also first look at recovering from the manufacturer.

What if the manufacturer or supplier has to put the fault right?

Then that obligation takes precedence. Insurers exclude damage that a third party must pay for under contract or by law; Article 6:185 DCC governs the producer's liability for a defective product. Keep the contract of sale and the warranty terms with the machine documents, so you can show whether that route is still open.

May I choose a workshop for the repair myself?

Discuss that with the insurer in advance. The method of repair and the choice of parts affect the payment, and with a machine still under warranty an independent workshop may affect that warranty. Damage arising from an earlier faulty repair or from an unapproved modification to the machine is excluded in virtually every policy.
