Yanmar is at heart an engine builder, and with this equipment the discussion with an insurer is rarely about the boom and almost always about the engine and about what has found its way into it.

Yanmar builds compact excavators and also supplies diesel engines for other manufacturers' machines. For the policy that has a practical consequence: the most expensive damage to such a machine is usually not a collision but an engine seizing up. And that is exactly where own-damage cover and additional cover for machinery breakdown part company.
Insurers pay for a sudden and unforeseen event. An engine that fails because of contaminated fuel, a shortage of coolant, or because work continued after the system gave a warning, is rarely assessed that way. The damage does become visible suddenly, but the cause lay in a process you could have stopped.
With modern engines the emissions after-treatment comes on top: the particulate filter, the catalytic converter and the AdBlue system. These are expensive components with their own failure patterns and their own exclusions.

Get coveredThe structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.
Damage you cause to others with the machine.
Damage to and theft of the machine, including inherent defect.
What comes into play with breakdown and transport.
What is covered
| Situation | Covered |
|---|---|
| Theft from the building site | Sometimes |
| Fire and storm damage | Yes |
| Inherent defect in the hydraulics | Sometimes |
| Damage to cables and pipes | Sometimes |
| Normal wear and tracks | No |
| Damage due to deferred maintenance | No |
This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
We look at the terms as well as the premium, and stay your point of contact when there is a claim.
We are not tied to one insurer and compare on the basis of an objective analysis of several companies.
You call or email someone who knows your file. No menu options, no changing call centres.
We cancel your old policy and align the start date, so you are never a day without cover.
We report the claim and monitor how it is handled. In urgent cases you can reach us on the emergency line.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.
Water, dirt or the wrong fuel in the tank is a recurring cause of expensive damage on compact equipment, certainly where fuelling is done from an IBC or a mobile tank on site. Many policies exclude damage caused by the wrong fuel put in the tank, or pay only for the direct engine damage and not for cleaning and flushing the whole fuel system. Check this point in your conditions before things go wrong.
A lot of idling stops a particulate filter regenerating, and the wrong or contaminated AdBlue attacks the dosing system. The repair runs into serious money and insurers see this as a consequence of use and maintenance, not as a sudden event. And never have the system switched off or bypassed with an emulator: that is prohibited and gives the insurer an independent ground to refuse a claim.
If a Yanmar engine sits in equipment from another manufacturer, the question with a defect is who you turn to. The warranty normally runs through the machine builder that put the whole unit on the market, not through the engine supplier. For your policy what counts is the object as it appears on the plant schedule, so with the make and type of the machine. Report the exchange or replacement of an engine, because that changes the insured object.
Compact equipment stands idle at landscapers and groundworkers for part of the year. In those months condensation forms in the tank, fuel goes stale, batteries run flat and brakes and cylinders seize. Damage resulting from that counts as gradual deterioration and falls outside cover. Lay the machine up properly, keep the fuel topped up and record where and how it is stored.
Yanmar engines are also fitted in machines of other makes, which makes parts readily available.
Not every company applies the same policy for this make. With unusual versions, the question is not what it costs but who will accept it.
This is what people ask us most.
Only if machinery breakdown or inherent defect is in your cover and the cause was sudden and unforeseen. If the engine seizes through too little coolant, through contaminated fuel or because work continued after a warning, that counts as a consequence of use and maintenance. Your service history and the machine's fault log determine that assessment.
Many policies exclude damage from putting in the wrong fuel, and policies that do cover it often pay only for the engine damage and not for cleaning the tank, lines and injection system. That last item is precisely the largest cost. Fuelling from your own tank or an IBC on site increases this risk, so check this provision in your conditions specifically.
No. Bypassing the emissions after-treatment is prohibited and gives the insurer an independent reason to refuse a claim. Even without any interference this area is vulnerable: a lot of idling hinders regeneration and contaminated AdBlue attacks the dosing system. Those costs are normally treated as maintenance and not as covered damage.
Damage caused by standing idle counts as gradual deterioration and falls outside cover. Think of condensation in the tank, stale fuel, flat batteries and seized cylinders. Lay the machine up in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and report where it is stored, because a different storage location can affect cover against theft and fire.
