In brief

An RS7 Sportback is rarely bought for town driving. It is a five-door coupé model with a great deal of power and range, built for long journeys on German and French motorways. That use produces a different risk profile from the compact models in the same range: less parking damage, more mileage, more time abroad and a greater chance that a loss occurs in a country whose language and claims system you do not know.

Third-party liability cover is settled within the European Economic Area: the insurance requirement in Article 2 WAM connects to a system under which your Dutch policy applies in the participating countries. The proof of insurance, the green card, states which countries those are. If you drive to a country that is not listed or that has been crossed out, separate frontier insurance is needed. So check the card before you leave, and not at the border post.

Own-damage cover and assistance are a separate matter. Breakdown assistance, repatriation of the car and its occupants and a replacement vehicle abroad are not automatically part of every car policy. See also comprehensive cover.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

The green card determines where you are insured

The proof of insurance shows a list of country codes. Codes that are not crossed out fall within your cover; crossed-out codes do not. For those countries you take out separate insurance at the border. Always take the card with you, digitally or on paper, because after a collision abroad it is the document by which the other party and the local police can establish your cover. Ask for a new card whenever your policy changes.

Damage abroad follows the law of that country

If a foreign driver hits you, your claim is assessed under the law of the country where the accident happened. That means different time limits, different heads of loss and sometimes a different approach to contributory fault. Always complete a European accident statement together, even if the other party admits fault, and photograph registration numbers, positions and damage. Without that form, a claim is almost impossible to settle months later.

Assistance and repatriation are separate cover

If you are left at the roadside in Germany or France after a breakdown or a collision, it is not your own-damage cover that sorts out what happens next but assistance cover. That determines whether recovery, storage, transport of the car back to the Netherlands and a replacement vehicle are paid for, and up to what amount. Check that this module is on your policy and that the period of cover matches your stay; some versions stop after a fixed number of consecutive weeks abroad.

Driving fast is allowed, racing is not

On a German motorway without a limit you remain insured as normal. That is ordinary use of the road. What is excluded is taking part in speed competitions, in skill and regularity trials and in anything that takes place on a circuit. Driving under the influence, driving without a valid licence and damage caused by intent or recklessness within the meaning of Article 7:952 DCC also fall outside the cover, wherever you are. No own-damage policy pays for tyre trouble or wear after a long journey.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Annual mileage. These cars cover a lot of ground. On this model the declared mileage is one of the heaviest factors.
  • Share of mileage abroad. Frequent and lengthy stays outside the Netherlands count towards the rate and towards the assistance chosen.
  • Assistance cover chosen. Breakdown assistance, repatriation and a replacement vehicle abroad are separate modules with their own premium.
  • List price and rating group. Power and value determine the rating group in which the insurer places this model.
  • Age and no-claims years of the driver. In this power class, experience and a claim-free history are often conditions of acceptance as well.
  • Description of use. Commuting, business journeys or purely private use each produce a different rate.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Am I insured throughout Europe?

Your third-party cover applies to the countries shown on your green card and not crossed out. Beyond those it does not: you then take out separate insurance at the border. Own-damage cover and assistance also have their own area of cover and sometimes a maximum period of continuous stay. Check both before you leave and take your proof of insurance with you.

What do I do after a collision in Germany?

Complete a European accident statement together on the spot, with the registration number, insurer and policy number of the other party. Take photographs of the positions, the damage and the surroundings. Call the police if anyone is injured or anything is unclear. Then report the claim to your own insurer, which can appoint a representative in the Netherlands through the claims settlement system.

Is driving without a speed limit covered?

Yes. On a stretch of road where no limit applies, driving fast is ordinary use of the road and the cover remains in force. It is different at a competition, a timed run or a track session: those are excluded. The insurer can also rely on the exclusions where driving was demonstrably reckless, whatever country you were in.

Will my car be brought back to the Netherlands after a breakdown?

Only if you have assistance cover or separate breakdown cover. That arranges recovery, storage, transport of the vehicle and travel for the occupants, each up to a maximum set out in the conditions. Without that module you pay for the transport yourself, even where the damage itself is covered under own-damage cover. Check this before you set off on a long journey.
