In brief

Anyone who drives an RS4 is buying power in the shape of an estate. These cars rarely stand still: holidays, trailers, bicycle racks, a dog crate and child seats. That pattern of use sets the RS4 apart from the coupés and saloons in the range and produces a different kind of claim. The engine is not the problem here; what is behind, on top of and inside the car is.

A separate rule applies to a trailer or caravan. As long as it is coupled to the car, liability for damage the outfit causes to third parties falls under the car's third-party cover. That follows from the duty to insure under Article 2 WAM. Damage to the trailer or caravan itself is therefore not covered: that needs its own own-damage cover. If the trailer comes uncoupled and then causes damage, the picture becomes more complicated.

The contents of the car deserve attention too. Luggage, laptops, pushchairs and sports equipment are not part of the vehicle and are not covered by own-damage cover. For how the cover is built up, see our page on comprehensive cover.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

The trailer is covered, the trailer itself is not

If you cause damage to someone else with a coupled trailer or caravan, the car's third-party cover deals with it. If the trailer itself is damaged, for example by being blown over or in a collision, that cover pays nothing: for that you take out separate caravan or trailer insurance. Watch the permitted towing weight on the registration document too; towing more than permitted can affect both the cover and your liability.

Whatever is on the roof or the towbar is an accessory

A roof box, roof bars, a bicycle rack and the bicycles on it are not part of the car. They are at most insured up to a limit set out in the conditions, and only where they have been declared. If something falls from the roof or the rack and causes damage to someone else, that is a liability question for which Article 6:162 DCC is the yardstick; check whether your policy covers that consequence.

Luggage in the car falls outside own-damage cover

If there is a break-in and suitcases, tools, a laptop or ski equipment disappear, the car insurance pays for the break-in damage to the car and not for the stolen items. Those belong on a home contents, travel or valuables policy, each with its own conditions about items left in a vehicle. Many of those policies require that the luggage was not visible and that there are signs of forced entry; record that carefully when you report it to the police.

A dog, a child seat and damage inside

Damage to the interior from the load, animals or a tipped-over container belongs to the ordinary risk of use and is not paid for. After a collision there is one point that is often forgotten: child seats and belt tensioners have to be replaced afterwards. Include those costs in the claim. Beyond that, wear, mechanical defects and damage you cause yourself while loading and unloading remain outside own-damage cover.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Whether a towbar is fitted. Driving with a trailer or caravan is a matter of use that insurers ask about when you apply.
  • Annual mileage. An Avant serving as a family car covers considerably more kilometres than a coupé from the same range.
  • Declared accessories. Roof bars, a roof box and a bicycle rack are only insured up to a set limit.
  • List price and weight. The estate version is heavier than the saloon and that feeds through into the rating group.
  • Drivers within the household. On a family car there are often two drivers. The youngest often determines the excess.
  • Use abroad. Holiday journeys with a laden car and trailer count in the rate and in the assistance chosen.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Is my caravan covered on the car insurance?

Only for liability while the caravan is coupled: damage the outfit causes to third parties falls under the car's third-party cover. Damage to the caravan itself does not, nor do its contents. For that you take out separate caravan insurance. Also check that you stay within the towing weight permitted on the registration document.

Are my bicycles on the bike rack insured?

Usually not from the car insurance. The rack itself may be insured as an accessory up to a limit, provided it has been declared. The bicycles usually fall under cycle insurance or under travel insurance with cover for luggage, each with its own requirements as to locks and supervision. Ask about this before you set off on holiday with expensive bicycles.

Will I be paid for luggage stolen from the car?

The car insurance pays for the damage to the car caused by the break-in, not for the contents. Luggage, electronics and tools belong on a travel, home contents or valuables policy. Those policies often require that the items were not visible in the car and that a break-in can be evidenced. Always report it to the police and keep the report.

Do I have to replace child seats after a collision?

Manufacturers require replacement after a collision of any significance, because the structure may be damaged in ways you cannot see. So include the seats in the claim, together with any belts and belt tensioners activated in the accident. Report this to the repairer and to the loss adjuster; adding it to a file that has already been settled is difficult.
