In brief

With Opel it is not the make but the trim level that determines where the car falls in the rating group. Weight, power and list price vary so widely within the range that two Opels on the same driveway can lead to a completely different rate.

Part of the range consists of van variants: the Combo, Vivaro and Movano. You insure those not as a passenger car but as a commercial vehicle, with questions of their own about how the load space is fitted out and about what is kept in it.

Opel is a volume make. Parts are widely available and virtually every body repairer works with them, which usually keeps the repair time after a claim short. For the electric versions that applies less: those need a certified workshop.

Independent, personal, sorted quickly

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Version and type number. The spread within the range is wide. The classification follows the version, not the model name.
  • Drivetrain. Petrol, diesel or electric. That feeds through into weight, list price and the repair circuit.
  • Passenger car or van variant. The Combo, Vivaro and Movano run on a commercial vehicle rate with acceptance questions of their own.
  • No-claims years. The position on the bonus-malus ladder weighs heaviest on every model.
  • Cover and excess: third-party liability, third-party, fire and theft, or comprehensive, and the excess you choose with it.
  • Age of the vehicle. On an older car, the market value on which own-damage cover pays falls.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

There is more difference within a model name than between two makes

A Corsa with a small petrol engine and a Corsa with an electric drivetrain carry the same name but differ in weight, power and list price. The rating group therefore differs too. If you ask for a premium on make and model name, you get a figure that need not apply to your car. Give the type number and the year of manufacture, and the indication will be right.

The Combo, Vivaro and Movano follow the light commercial vehicle rules

For these variants a commercial vehicle rate applies and a different acceptance question: who drives it, what for, and how is the load space fitted out. Fixed fittings such as racking, a load floor or a roof rack do not automatically count in the list price; declare those separately with their value. Tools and materials in the load space fall outside every vehicle policy and call for separate cover.

On the electric versions, what hangs around the car counts too

The charging cable is a separate item and regularly disappears at a public charge point; whether theft of it is covered varies from policy to policy and is not automatically part of the own-damage cover. A charge point on the wall belongs to your home and falls under buildings insurance (opstalverzekering), not under the car policy. Loss of capacity of the battery pack is covered nowhere and is a warranty matter.

On an older Opel, the market value determines the own-damage assessment

Because parts are widely available, repairing an older Astra or Zafira often remains straightforward. On a total loss, however, you get the market value, and that falls faster than the own-damage premium does. Work out whether comprehensive cover still outweighs the value you would actually get back. Wear, rust and deferred maintenance are not insured under any cover.

Your no-claims years are held in Roy-data

You build up no-claims years for each year without an at-fault claim, and you usually lose five at once when a claim is paid. They are registered in Roy-data, the central system of Dutch insurers, and therefore transfer automatically to a new insurer. With most insurers, glass damage does not count.

Car insurance

Work out whether claiming pays

With an at-fault claim you usually lose five no-claims years and your premium rises for years, because you then climb back up step by step. For a small claim, paying yourself can be cheaper. Always ask for a damage assessment before you finalise a claim.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Why does the premium differ so much between two Opels?

Because the classification into a rating group follows from weight, power and list price, and those three vary widely within this range. A compact petrol car and a larger electric version sit in different classes. So always ask for a premium on the type number and the year of manufacture.

Do I insure a Combo or Vivaro as a light commercial vehicle?

Yes. Those variants run on a commercial vehicle rate, with questions about use, drivers and how the load space is fitted out. Fixed fittings you declare separately with their value. Whatever lies loose in the load space is not covered by any vehicle policy and calls for separate insurance.

Is the charging cable of my electric Opel insured?

That varies from policy to policy and is not automatically part of the own-damage cover. Ask about it before you assume it. A charge point fixed to your home falls under buildings insurance and not under the car insurance. Loss of battery capacity is insured nowhere.

Is comprehensive cover still worthwhile on an older Astra?

Work it out on the basis of the market value. On a total loss the insurer pays that value, not the replacement cost of an equivalent car. If the own-damage premium over a few years comes close to that amount, third-party, fire and theft or third-party liability is often the more logical choice.
