Jaguar is the only make in this segment where the first question is not which cover you choose, but which type of policy: ordinary car insurance or a youngtimer or classic car policy.

The Dutch Jaguar fleet falls into two groups with little in common. On one side are the modern models that cover mileage every day as company or leased cars, including the fully electric version. On the other is a large group of older examples kept as enthusiasts' cars, whose value no longer falls but stabilises or rises. Different types of policy and different acceptance conditions apply to those two groups.
If you drive every day, it is about the usual matters: no-claims years, mileage, excess and whether comprehensive cover can still be justified. On an electric version there is also the battery pack, the charging cable and the home charger, which are far from being insured as standard on every policy.
If your car is more than fifteen years old and you use it sparingly, a classic car or youngtimer insurance comes into view, with an an agreed value under Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code instead of market value. There is a restriction on use attached to it: those policies usually exclude commuting and everyday use.
The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.
Damage you cause to others.
Causes beyond your control.
Including damage you cause yourself.
What is covered
| Situation | Third-party liability | Third-party, fire and theft | Comprehensive |
|---|---|---|---|
| Damage to the other party | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Theft | No | Yes | Yes |
| Fire and storm | No | Yes | Yes |
| Damage you cause yourself | No | No | Yes |
| Wear and mechanical defects | No | No | No |
| Driving without a valid licence | No | No | No |
This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.
Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.
On a total loss an ordinary policy works from market value, and on a well-maintained older example that does not do justice to what you get back. An enthusiasts' policy with a valuation solves that, but sets requirements as to age, mileage, storage and having a second car. If you do not meet those conditions, the cover is open to question when you claim. So first have it assessed which of the two forms suits your actual use.
The battery pack is the most expensive part of the car and can lead to a total loss even after limited damage to the underside. Check whether damage to the pack, to the charging cable and to a fixed home charger is insured, and whether theft of a cable while charging falls under the cover. Loss of battery capacity through normal use is excluded; that is degradation and not damage.
Many examples are registered to a business or driven for business. That changes who the policyholder is, who counts as the main driver and how no-claims years are built up. Under a business registration you build up no no-claims years privately, unless that is expressly arranged. If the declared form of use does not match reality, the insurer can rely on Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code and limit the payout.
Wear, rust and mechanical defects are excluded, and that affects older examples with aluminium and steel parts directly. On an enthusiasts' policy, use outside the agreed purposes is also excluded, such as commuting or hire. Damage arising during a restoration or while the car is being worked on by a third party often falls under a policy other than yours. Ask about that before you take the car in.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
The questions we are asked most often about this.
As soon as you can meet the conditions of use: limited mileage, locked storage and another car for everyday use. The advantage is that the value is agreed in advance instead of established afterwards as market value. If you do not meet those conditions, stay on an ordinary policy; an enthusiasts' policy on a car you drive every day gives false security.
Against damage from an external event it usually is, for example in a collision, a fire or contact with the ground. Loss of capacity through age and normal use is excluded, because that is degradation and not an insured event. Also look separately at the charging cable and a fixed charge point at your home; those are far from always on the car policy as standard and sometimes sit on the buildings insurance (opstalverzekering).
Not automatically. With a business registration the no-claims years usually accrue to the company and not to you personally. If you want to be able to use them privately later, have it recorded at the outset who counts as the main driver and how the years are recorded. Transferring them afterwards rarely works and you only notice it when you insure privately again.
No. Corrosion, wear and mechanical defects fall outside every own-damage cover, including on an enthusiasts' policy. What does count is their effect on the valuation: a valuer assesses the condition and that condition determines the amount paid on a total loss. Have a fresh valuation done after a restoration, otherwise you are working with a value the car no longer reflects.
