Third-party liability
- Damage to other cars and injury
- No cover for your own Lexus
- Compulsory under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM)
- Only suitable for an old example
Lexus is the luxury marque of Toyota and supplies almost its entire range with hybrid or electric drive. That technology, combined with a high list price, determines how a Lexus is insured and what to look out for in the conditions.

Insurers classify cars by list price, weight and power. Because of its equipment and its new price, a Lexus normally falls into a higher premium class than a comparably positioned car from a volume marque. So always state the exact version and the registration number when you apply: models such as the UX, NX, RX, ES and LC differ widely in value and repair costs, and an application based only on the marque produces a premium that does not hold up when you claim.
The hybrid drive is the second point. A full hybrid combines a combustion engine with one or more electric motors and a high-voltage battery. When there is damage that means working on a live system, repair technicians with separate training and, after a collision, often a compulsory check of the battery and the wiring. Repairers without marque approval are not always allowed to carry out that work, and that makes it relevant whether your policy permits repair at a marque-approved repairer or sends you to an affiliated repair chain.
Third-party liability cover is required by law under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM) and pays only for damage you cause to someone else. Damage to the Lexus itself falls under own-damage cover. Because of the driver assistance systems in the bumper, the mirrors and the windscreen — which have to be recalibrated after replacement — repair costs mount up faster than the appearance suggests. Comprehensive cover therefore remains sensible for longer with this marque than with an average mid-range car.
We compare your car insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) that you receive before you take out cover.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
We look at the terms as well as the premium, and stay your point of contact when there is a claim.

Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
Four points that arise more often with this marque than with an average passenger car.
After a collision in which the battery or the high-voltage wiring may be involved, a safety procedure follows: the system is de-energised and checked before any work is done. That takes time and calls for a trained technician. So ask in advance whether the insurer allows free choice of repairer or works solely with its own network. If the policy uses a compulsory network and you still want to go to the marque dealer, a higher excess or a contribution often applies. Record that arrangement before the repair starts.
The premium follows the list price, not the purchase price. With a young Lexus, what matters most is therefore the a replacement-value-as-new or purchase-value arrangement: for a period named in the policy the insurer pays on a total loss on the basis of the original price instead of the market value. Once that period expires, you fall back on market value. With an older Lexus that now counts as a youngtimer, a valuation under Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code can be worthwhile, so that the value is fixed in advance instead of being estimated afterwards by a loss adjuster.
The following, among others, are outside the cover: loss of capacity and ageing of the hybrid battery — that is wear and falls under the warranty, not under the insurance; mechanical and electronic defects without a collision, including the resulting damage; and damage during speed or skill trials and on a circuit, even on a touring run. Damage caused by intent or recklessness is also excluded under Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code, and damage from the wrong fuel or from driving on after a warning message is often refused wholly or in part.
With cars in this segment insurers more often impose requirements on security, certainly on versions with keyless entry. That can be an approved alarm or tracking system. If such a requirement is in the policy and has not been met, theft is not covered. Also report any departures from the factory specification and any import origin: when the contract is entered into the duty of disclosure in Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code and a breach of it can void the payout (Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code). Report a claim as soon as is reasonably possible, as Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code requires.
This is what people ask us most.
Not automatically. The hybrid technology raises repair costs after a serious collision, but hybrids do not by definition show a higher claims burden. What mainly determines the premium is the list price and the power of the version chosen. The difference between insurers is large with this marque, because not everyone applies the same repair arrangements.
That depends on the policy. Some insurers work with a free choice of repairer, others with their own network where you pay a higher excess if you go elsewhere. With high-voltage systems, marque approval genuinely matters, because not every firm is authorised to work on those systems. Ask about this before you take out cover and record the answer in writing.
With own-damage cover, damage to the battery caused by a covered event, such as a collision or fire, is insured. What is not covered is the gradual loss of capacity through use and ageing. The importer's factory warranty applies to that, often linked to periodic checks at an approved firm. Have those checks carried out; it is the only route to payment for battery ageing.
When you can and want to carry the damage to the car yourself. A rule of thumb is that comprehensive cover is worthwhile as long as the market value is well above the amount you would be willing to pay from your own resources. With a Lexus, one repaired front bumper with sensors quickly costs a multiple of the difference in premium, so assess it each year against the market value, the excess and the difference in premium.
Report it when you apply. With an imported example the version and the original list price sometimes differ from the Dutch reference, which has consequences for the premium and for establishing the value when you claim. The availability of parts can also differ. Make sure the details on the registration certificate and on the policy match each other.
