In brief

The Model X is the largest SUV in the range: tall, wide, heavy and available with a third row of seats. Two characteristics determine the claims picture. The rear doors open upwards and depend on sensors, and the car is taller than the average car park or carport comfortably allows.

Both lead to damage of your own doing: a door that catches a low ceiling beam or a service duct, a roof edge that hits a barrier. That kind of damage falls only under comprehensive cover. Third-party, fire and theft does nothing with it, because no fire, theft, storm or broken glass is involved.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Value and version. The version, the number of seats and the accessories declared determine what the own-damage cover has to carry.
  • Kerb weight and dimensions. A tall, heavy SUV causes more damage to the other party in a collision.
  • Where the vehicle is kept. Whether the car fits in a garage and how it is secured counts in the premium and in acceptance.
  • Trailer or towbar. Driving with a trailer or caravan is assessed separately and changes the risk profile.
  • Claims history and no-claims years. Manoeuvring damage counts like any other. A series of small at-fault claims feeds through into the step.
  • Additional cover. Occupants' insurance, legal expenses cover and a replacement vehicle raise the premium but close gaps.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Falcon-wing doors in tight spaces

The rear doors swing upwards and measure the space with sensors. Dirty or misaligned sensors, a sloping driveway or a low ceiling beam mean that a door catches something after all. Damage to your own car is then damage of your own doing and falls exclusively under comprehensive cover. If you hit the car next to you, your third-party liability cover pays for that damage (Article 2 of the WAM), but it remains an at-fault claim that costs you no-claims years.

A faulty door is not damage

If a falcon-wing door no longer opens or does not close properly without anything having struck it, that is a mechanical or electronic defect. That belongs with the warranty or with servicing and is covered by no car insurance policy; wear and inherent defects are excluded in every form of own-damage cover. Only where an identifiable event from outside has damaged the hinge or the drive mechanism is there an insured claim.

Height, roof bars and the building

If you drive into a car park, a barrier or a carport, there is damage to your car and to the structure. The latter runs through your third-party liability cover. Roof bars, a roof box or a bike rack are only insured with the car if you have declared them, and the bikes or luggage on them never are. Measure the height including the rack to be sure, and allow for the rear doors in the open position.

Seven seats, but not everything is insured

Injury to your passengers is paid from your third-party liability cover. Your own injury as the driver is not. For that, occupants' accident insurance or an accident cover is needed, and it is not included as standard. Child seats, shopping, laptops and other belongings in the car do not fall under the own-damage cover. Even where there is a theft from the car, the contents go unpaid, however carefully you had locked it.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Is damage to a falcon-wing door covered?

Only where an event from outside lies behind it and you have comprehensive cover. If the door strikes a ceiling or a wall, that is damage of your own doing which only comprehensive cover pays for. If the door stops working without anything having happened, it is a technical defect and the report goes to the warranty or the workshop, not to the insurer.

Who pays for the damage to the car park?

That damage you cause to someone else and it therefore falls under your compulsory third-party liability cover (Article 2 of the WAM). The operator claims from your insurer and it pays, whichever form of own-damage cover you have. The damage to your own car does not come out of it: for that you need comprehensive cover. The at-fault claim also feeds through into your no-claims years.

Are the belongings and child seats in the car insured as well?

No. The car insurance covers the vehicle and the accessories declared, not what you carry in it. Child seats, laptops, tools and luggage fall outside the cover, including where there is a theft from a locked car. For private belongings, home contents insurance may do something subject to conditions; for business items separate cover is needed.

Is my own injury as the driver covered?

Not from the third-party liability cover: that is there for other people. If you cause the accident yourself, your own injury goes unpaid unless you have insured occupants' accident insurance or an accident cover with the policy. Passengers are protected, because they count as injured third parties. With seven seats, that additional cover is worth considering.
