In brief

With this make, the distinguishing risk lies not in power or susceptibility to theft, but in the density of driver assistance systems. A camera unit sits behind the windscreen, radar modules sit in the bumpers and sensors sit in the mirrors. After a windscreen or bumper is replaced, those systems have to be recalibrated, and that calibration is a separate cost alongside the part itself.

The second characteristic is the pattern of use. Volvos, and the estates in particular, cover above-average motorway mileage with luggage, roof boxes and bike racks. That increases exposure and makes the annual mileage you declare a real point of attention.

If you prefer another family car in the same segment, the pages on Kia and Renault are useful for comparison.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Glass replacement calls for calibration

A chip in the windscreen is rarely a simple job on these cars. If the crack is in the camera's field of view, the glass has to be replaced and the system then reset. Check whether your policy includes those calibration costs and whether an approved repairer is required for them. If you choose a firm yourself, many policies apply a higher excess for glass replacement.

Driver assistance systems do not take over your liability

If you run into the vehicle in front with lane assist or adaptive cruise control switched on, you remain liable as the driver under Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Code. The insurance obligation under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM) is built on precisely that. A system that failed to intervene is no defence towards the other party; at most a product argument with the manufacturer may arise afterwards, and that is separate from your policy.

Roof box, bike rack and luggage

A roof box or bike rack falls as an accessory under a separate limit in your policy and must be declared separately if it is worth more. The contents are not part of the car insurance: stolen bikes, luggage and sports equipment should be insured elsewhere. If the load falls off the roof and causes damage to someone else, that liability does fall under third-party liability cover.

When comprehensive cover remains worthwhile on a sensor-heavy car

The usual rule of thumb is to switch to third-party, fire and theft as the market value falls. On a car with many sensors that sum works out differently: a single collision quickly involves the bumper, radar, camera and calibration all at once, so repair costs stay high while the market value falls. Work that relationship out explicitly rather than blindly following the standard rule.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Trim level and drivetrain — Petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid or fully electric each give a different weight and a different rating group.
  • List price including option packs — Driver assistance and safety packs raise the value and with it the cost of repair after a claim.
  • Weight and body style — An estate or SUV falls into a different weight class from the saloon with the same engine.
  • Annual mileage — A lot of motorway mileage increases exposure and with it the premium you pay.
  • Driver and no-claims years — The age, driving experience and claims record of whoever drives the car most.
  • Cover, excess and glass arrangement — The type of cover, plus whether glass repair and calibration are paid without an excess.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

Is calibration after glass replacement paid for?

Under most policies it is, but not always without conditions. Some insurers pay for the calibration only where the glass was replaced by an approved repairer, and apply a higher excess where you choose freely. Ask about this in advance, because resetting the camera and radar is a substantial part of the bill alongside the glass itself.

Am I liable if the driver assistance did not intervene?

Yes. The driver remains responsible for the vehicle, even when assistance systems are active. Towards the other party, Article 6:162 of the Dutch Civil Code simply applies and third-party liability cover pays out. If you believe a system failed, that is a matter between you and the manufacturer or importer, and it runs entirely separately from the settlement with your insurer.

Are my roof box and bike rack insured?

As accessories they fall under the limit your policy sets for them; if they are worth more than that, declare them separately. The contents are never insured on the car policy. Bikes on the rack, luggage in the box and sports equipment belong on a home contents, bicycle or travel policy, depending on the situation.

Why is my car a write-off after a minor collision?

Because a collision to the nose rarely stops at the bodywork. The bumper, radar module, parking sensors and the camera behind the windscreen are often all involved at once, and the calibration comes on top of that. On an older car those costs quickly exceed the market value, after which the loss adjuster declares the vehicle a write-off instead of advising repair.
