The name of the make says little about the risk. A Macan or Cayenne covers everyday miles with child seats and shopping, a Taycan hangs on the charge point and makes business journeys, and a 911, Boxster or Cayman stands indoors for much of the year and comes out when it is dry. Insurers assess that difference sharply; it is therefore the first question we ask before we request quotations.
What goes wrong then differs from model to model. With the SUVs it turns on parking damage, glass damage and mileage. With the electric models, on the battery pack, the charging cable and the charging equipment at home. With the sports cars, on security, storage and the question whether comprehensive cover is still justifiable on an older car. We have separate pages for the individual models, including the 911, the Macan and the Taycan.
What all the models share is the security requirement. With this make, insurers often require an approved alarm and tracking system and tie the theft cover to it. If the installation does not meet the prescribed class or the subscription to the tracking system has expired, you are left empty-handed after a theft, even though the rest of the policy is in order.
The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.
Damage you cause to others.
Causes beyond your control.
Including damage you cause yourself.
What is covered
| Situation | Third-party liability | Third-party, fire and theft | Comprehensive |
|---|---|---|---|
| Damage to the other party | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Theft | No | Yes | Yes |
| Fire and storm | No | Yes | Yes |
| Damage you cause yourself | No | No | Yes |
| Wear and mechanical defects | No | No | No |
| Driving without a valid licence | No | No | No |
This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.
Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.
The policy that suits an SUV driven every day, with a generous mileage allowance and a low excess on glass damage, is unsuitable for a sports car that covers a few thousand kilometres a year. The other way round, a limited-use arrangement on a family car will run into overruns. So have the cover set up per car and not per make, even where two Porsches stand at the same address.
For this make, insurers prescribe a security class, often including a vehicle tracking system with a running subscription. That requirement appears in the policy as a condition: after a theft it is checked whether the system was working and active. It also almost always applies that you must be able to produce all the keys. If a key is missing or the subscription turns out to have expired, there is a good chance that nothing will be paid.
Look beyond the car itself. Is the charging cable covered against theft while charging, does the fixed charge point at your home fall under the car or the buildings insurance, and is damage to the battery pack after contact with the ground insured? Loss of capacity through normal use is excluded, because that is degradation and not an insured event. That distinction is by no means described equally clearly on every insurance card (verzekeringskaart).
If you drive a sports car alongside the everyday car, there are insurers that offer a limited-use arrangement with a low mileage allowance and a storage requirement. That brings the premium down considerably, but it does tie you to those conditions. If the car unexpectedly goes into daily use for a period, report that; the duty of disclosure under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code continues during the term and does not apply only when you take out the policy.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
The questions we are asked most often about this.
They can be with the same insurer and in the same package, but the cover is set up per vehicle. An SUV driven every day and a sports car with a limited mileage have different types of use, excesses and security requirements. Some insurers have a second-car arrangement under which the no-claims years of the first car carry through. We ask about that specifically when comparing.
A condition of the policy has then not been met and the insurer can refuse or reduce the payment. The security class and the associated subscription are stated as a requirement for a reason. Check at renewal whether the subscription is still running and keep the installation certificates. Also make sure you can produce all the keys, because that too is almost always a condition.
Usually not. A permanently fitted charge point at your home is more often placed under buildings insurance, while a loose cable sometimes is and sometimes is not on the car policy. Ask about both points expressly, because where a cable is stolen during charging, insurers are apt to point at one another. We record that dividing line in writing before the policy is taken out.
Yes, through a limited-use arrangement with a low mileage allowance and a storage requirement, or by suspending the registration during a long period of standing. Note what suspension means: the third-party liability cover lapses and the car may not go on the public road. Damage in storage, such as fire or theft, is then only covered if you deliberately keep the own-damage cover running.
