Insuring a Porsche 911

With the 911, the market value of sought-after versions bears no relation to the market value an insurer applies, and that difference is something you settle in advance or not at all.

In brief

A market value basis assumes depreciation. For a number of generations and versions of this model that assumption has not held for years: demand keeps prices steady or pushes them up. If you insure on market value, you receive an amount if the car is written off with which you cannot buy a comparable example. A agreed value valuation by a recognised valuer fixes the value; Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code gives that agreed value its effect.

A valuation report has a period of validity. If it expires without a fresh valuation, you fall back on market value when you claim and the whole advantage is gone. Put the end date in your diary and have the car revalued before the report expires, particularly in a market where values move. When the valuation is made, also state the version, the history and the documentation available, because these help determine the value agreed.

The third point is repair. Parts for the older, air-cooled generations come through a different channel from those for recent models, with longer delivery times. Allow for the time a repair takes and for the question of whether your policy requires original parts. See also the youngtimer policy for older examples and insuring sports cars.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Agreed value. The value recorded in the report is the basis for premium and payment.
  • Generation and trim level. A Carrera, a Turbo and a GT version are each assessed separately on power and value.
  • Mileage band. A limited number of kilometres a year keeps the premium down, provided you really stay within that limit.
  • Storage and security. A locked garage, alarm class and a tracking system with a live subscription all count heavily.
  • Age and claims history of the driver. Driving experience and the policyholder's step help determine acceptance.
  • Type of cover and excess. Own-damage cover on the agreed value combined with the excess chosen per event.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Valuation and revaluation

Have the car inspected by a recognised valuer and keep the report with the policy. It states the version, mileage, condition and the value agreed, supported by photographs. Under Article 7:960 DCC that value is the starting point when you claim, for as long as the report is valid. Have a fresh valuation done in good time, because an expired report means settlement on market value. Also report it if you have major work or a restoration carried out after the valuation.

Parts differ by generation

Body panels, glass and interior parts for the older generations come through a classic channel with limited stock and longer delivery times. For recent models they come from the regular warehouse. That difference determines how long your car stands idle and whether a repairer works with used or new parts. Set out in the policy what applies, because a clause allowing non-original parts keeps repair costs down but affects the value of your car.

Storage, tracking system and clauses

With this model, insurers almost always set requirements: storage in a locked space, an approved alarm and, for higher values, a tracking system with a live subscription. Those requirements also apply while you are away, for example when you stay overnight. If the subscription to the tracking system lapses, the theft cover that depends on it falls away. Also check that the storage address on the policy is still correct after a move.

What is not covered

Outside the cover: driving on a circuit, during timed driver training and during speed trials; damage arising while the car is being worked on, restored or dismantled; diminution in value after a properly executed repair, unless separately insured; undeclared options and accessories; wear to tyres, clutch and brakes; and theft where the agreed security was not in operation or the subscription had expired.

Repairs and parts

Original parts and brand repair are decisive for the residual value after a claim.

Acceptance differs per insurer

Not every company applies the same policy for this make. With unusual versions, the question is not what it costs but who will accept it.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Do I need a valuation report?

For this model that is the only way to fix the value in advance. Without a report the insurer settles on market value if the car is written off, and market value does not follow the market for sought-after versions. A recognised valuer records the version, condition and mileage with photographs; under Article 7:960 DCC that agreed value is then the starting point when you claim.

How long does my valuation remain valid?

The report states a period of validity. While that runs, the agreed value applies. After that you fall back on market value, even if you have simply continued paying the premium. So have a fresh valuation done in good time and report major work, a restoration or a change to the specification, because these can affect the agreed value.

What security does the insurer require?

Usually storage in a locked space, an approved alarm system and, for higher values, a tracking system with a live subscription. Those requirements appear as a clause on the policy and also apply when you stay overnight away from home. If the subscription to the tracking system lapses, the theft cover attached to it falls away. Always notify a move or a different storage address.

What if an original part is not available?

That then depends on the clause in your policy. Some conditions require original parts, others allow used or equivalent parts. With older generations, supply runs through a classic channel with limited stock, which lengthens the repair time. Discuss in advance what applies, so that after a claim you are not faced with a choice that affects the value of your car.
