Insuring a Porsche Boxster

The Boxster almost always stands alongside an everyday car and has a fabric roof. Those two facts together determine how you set this policy up.

In brief

As a second car the Boxster covers few kilometres, often in the summer season. That makes a low mileage band achievable, but it also raises a practical problem: no-claims years are registered per policy and you can only apply the years you have built up to one vehicle at a time. So ask how the insurer deals with a second car in the same name and whether an arrangement exists for a second vehicle.

The vulnerable part is the roof. A fabric roof is cut open in a break-in, tears when folded in freezing weather and lets water through when the drainage channels become blocked. Damage to the roof from a break-in falls under own-damage cover; tears through ageing or through folding at low temperatures do not. And water running into the interior through blocked channels is a maintenance defect and not a sudden event.

If the car stands idle in winter, the question arises whether you suspend the registration. The obligation under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM) then lapses, but with that obligation the cover for use on the road disappears as well. If you want fire, theft and storm damage in storage to continue, agree that expressly. See also the closed version.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Trim level and engine power. A basic version, an S or a more powerful variant fall into different rating groups.
  • Value of the car. Market value or agreed value, including declared options, is the basis for the own-damage premium.
  • Mileage band. A seasonal car covers few kilometres. A low band noticeably reduces the premium.
  • Storage. A locked garage counts for more with a convertible than with a closed car.
  • Second vehicle and no-claims years. Whether the insurer has a second-vehicle arrangement determines the step you start on.
  • Driver's age and excess. Driving experience and the excess chosen per event work through into the rate.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

The roof as the weak point

With a convertible, burglars choose the roof over the door, because it is quicker and quieter. The damage to the roof itself falls under own-damage cover, but the items taken from the interior do not: those belong with home contents or valuables cover. So leave nothing behind, not even a bag on the floor. Tears through ageing, discolouration and seams that have come apart are wear and likewise remain at your expense.

Second car and no-claims years

The step you have built up sits on a policy and not on you as a person. If you insure a second car, it starts at the bottom in principle, unless the insurer has an arrangement for a second vehicle under which the step on the first car is mirrored. Ask about that before you take out the policy, because the difference in premium over several years is considerable. Also declare who else drives the car.

Winter storage and suspension

Suspending the registration lifts the insurance requirement under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM) and you may not then use the car on the road. The cover for road use falls away with it. Fire, theft and storm damage in storage only continue if the policy expressly says so. Also check whether your insurer's storage requirements apply during the winter period too, and whether the storage address you declared is still correct.

What is not covered

Outside the cover: wear, discolouration and tears in the roof through ageing or through folding in freezing weather; water damage from blocked roof drains; loose items and luggage in the interior; driving on a circuit or during timed training; damage while the car is being worked on or dismantled; and undeclared accessories such as different wheels or a sports exhaust. Exceeding the agreed mileage band can also affect the assessment.

Repairs and parts

The roof mechanism and engine repairs are specialised and expensive.

Acceptance differs per insurer

Not every company applies the same policy for this make. With unusual versions, the question is not what it costs but who will accept it.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Is damage to my roof covered?

If the roof is cut open in a break-in or damaged by another insured event, it is. Tears through ageing, discolouration, seams that have come apart and damage caused by folding at low temperatures are wear and fall outside the cover. Water damage in the interior caused by blocked drainage channels is treated as a maintenance defect and therefore not as a sudden event.

Can I suspend the registration in winter?

Yes. The insurance requirement under Article 2 WAM then lapses and you may no longer use the car on the public road. The cover for road use falls away with it. If you want fire, theft and storm damage in storage to continue as normal, agree that expressly and have it put on the policy before you suspend the registration.

Can I use my no-claims years on two cars?

In principle, no. The step attaches to the policy, not to the person, and can only be applied to one vehicle at a time. Some insurers have an arrangement for a second vehicle under which the step on the first car is taken over, often with conditions about use and mileage. Ask about it before you take out the second policy.

Are items in the car covered?

No, not under the motor policy. Own-damage cover pays for the break-in damage to the roof, door or lock, but not for what was taken. Bags, equipment and personal belongings fall under your home contents or valuables cover, often with conditions about leaving them visible in a vehicle. With a convertible, leave nothing in the car at all, not even in the luggage compartment.
