Insuring a Porsche Macan

In brief

Within the Porsche range, the Macan is the model that most often serves as an ordinary everyday car: commuting, the school run, the car park at the office. That pattern of use determines the claims pattern. It is not the one big impact but the accumulation of parking damage, stone chips and wheel damage that weighs on the policy. For your choice of cover that matters more than the power under the bonnet.

With this model, repair is rarely just about bodywork. The bumpers house parking sensors and radar for the driver assistance systems, and behind the front end sits cooling that is deformed even by a light impact. After repair, those systems have to be recalibrated. So ask before you sign whether your insurer pays for repair at a brand repairer, or whether you will be sent to an approved body shop.

The Macan is supplied both with a combustion engine and fully electric. Declare the version precisely: the electric version is assessed differently and requires a repairer allowed to work on high-voltage systems. If you also drive a larger SUV or an electric Porsche, look as well at the Cayenne and the Taycan.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Version and drivetrain. Basic version, S, GTS or Turbo, and whether it is a combustion engine or the electric Macan.
  • Sum insured including options. With this model the options list accounts for a substantial part of the value; declare it, not just the base model.
  • Annual mileage and commuting. Daily use counts more heavily than occasional use and is recorded on the policy.
  • Storage and level of security. Locked garage, driveway or street, plus any tracking system or pedal lock against relay theft.
  • No-claims years and youngest driver. The registered no-claims years and the age of the youngest regular driver.
  • Type of cover and excess. Third-party liability, third-party fire and theft or comprehensive cover, and the excess you bear per event.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

A Porsche used for commuting

A Macan in daily use covers more kilometres in a few years than an enthusiast's car does in twenty. You declare that annual mileage when you take out the policy and it falls under your duty of disclosure under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Code. If you start driving substantially more, for example after a move or a new place of work, report it during the term. If it turns out when you claim that the declaration was incorrect, the insurer may adjust the payment under Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code.

Wheels, tyres and the underside

The Macan sits on large wheels with low-profile tyres. A kerb you clip while parking easily costs a wheel and a tyre, and manoeuvring into a bollard takes the bumper sensors with it. Tyre or wheel damage on its own without a collision falls outside own-damage cover: only where there is an impact, vandalism or another event from outside does that damage qualify for payment.

Theft and the key

Compact premium SUVs are taken using a relay attack, in which the signal from your key is extended from the hallway to the car. In this segment insurers therefore often set an additional requirement: an approved vehicle tracking system with a live subscription, a pedal lock or storage in a locked garage. That requirement appears as a clause on your policy. If the subscription lapses or you routinely park elsewhere, theft cover can fall away.

What is not covered

Outside the cover: wear to tyres, brake discs and clutch; taking part in training on a circuit and timed runs; damage after the engine management has been modified or undeclared parts have been fitted; hire or use through a car-sharing platform; damage to a trailer, bike rack or roof box that is not on the policy; and damage you cause intentionally or through recklessness, as referred to in Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code.

Repairs and parts

Brand repair with original parts is decisive for the residual value.

Acceptance differs per insurer

Not every company applies the same policy for this make. With unusual versions, the question is not what it costs but who will accept it.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Does comprehensive cover remain defensible on a Macan for long?

As long as a write-off is an amount you would not want to absorb yourself, comprehensive or own-damage cover is the logical choice. With this model the small claims also count: parking damage and calibrated sensors are entirely at your own expense without own-damage cover. Once the market value falls far enough, third-party, fire and theft becomes defensible. Work that out against the premium and the excess.

Is damage to a wheel or tyre covered?

Only where that damage results from an insured event, such as a collision or vandalism. If you hit a kerb or a pothole and the wheel or tyre is destroyed without there having been an impact with another party, that is not an event from outside and own-damage cover does not pay. The same goes for a blowout caused by wear.

Does the insurer set requirements for the key or security?

Often yes. In this segment a clause regularly appears on the policy requiring a vehicle tracking system, a pedal lock or that the car is kept in a locked space. That requirement is a condition of cover, not advice. If you do not meet it at the time of the theft, the insurer can refuse or limit payment.

May I tow a trailer or caravan with the Macan?

Yes, and as long as the trailer is coupled, liability falls under the third-party liability cover of the car, on the basis of Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM). Damage to the trailer or caravan itself is not insured by that. For that you need a separate policy. Do declare the towbar, as well as a bike rack or roof box you use regularly.
