With BMW, acceptance turns on two things: a lot of power on the rear axle, and how prone models with keyless entry are to theft.

BMW supplies practically every model in a range of engines that ends with the M versions. Insurers look not at the series but at the ratio between power and weight, and at who drives. The combination of a young driver and a powerful version regularly leads to an increased excess or to a refusal.
The second point is theft. On cars with keyless entry the signal from the key is picked up inside the house and amplified, after which the car is driven away without any forced entry. Insurers respond to that with security requirements in the policy: an approved alarm or vehicle tracking system, sometimes with an active subscription. That is a warranty clause, not advice.
If you also ride a motorcycle, see the page on Insuring a BMW Motorrad. For the compact models from the same group, the MINI page is more relevant.
We compare your car insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

Damage you cause to others.
Causes beyond your control.
Including damage you cause yourself.

|---|---|---|---|
| Damage to the other party | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Theft | No | Yes | Yes |
| Fire and storm | No | Yes | Yes |
| Damage you cause yourself | No | No | Yes |
| Wear and mechanical defects | No | No | No |
| Driving without a valid licence | No | No | No |
This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
We look at the terms as well as the premium, and stay your point of contact when there is a claim.
We are not tied to one insurer and compare on the basis of an objective analysis of several companies.
You call or email someone who knows your file. No menu options, no changing call centres.
We cancel your old policy and align the start date, so you are never a day without cover.
We report the claim and monitor how it is handled. In urgent cases you can reach us on the emergency line.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.
An M version or a powerful six-cylinder driving the rear axle is assessed differently by insurers from an entry-level engine in the same body. Some companies apply a minimum age or a minimum number of no-claims years before they will accept such a car. Declare the M package and the actual power when you apply. A modification made afterwards without notification can cost you the cover when you claim.
If your policy states that an approved alarm system or vehicle tracking system must be fitted, that is a condition of cover for theft. If the system is missing, or the subscription had expired at the time of the theft, the insurer can refuse to pay. With keyless entry, keep the keys in a signal-blocking holder and keep the installation certificate with your policy papers.
Large alloy wheels with low-profile tyres are easily damaged by kerbs and potholes. Own-damage cover only pays for that where there is a collision or impact. A blowout, tyre trouble or a wheel that cracks in a pothole counts as an inherent defect or damage from use. For a breakdown on the road you need breakdown assistance, not own-damage cover.
Driving on a circuit is excluded under practically every car insurance policy, even without any element of competition and even on an open leisure day. The same applies to driver training or skid courses in which times are taken. If injury or damage is caused to others, the insurer can moreover rely on Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code in cases of wilful recklessness and recover the amount paid out from you.
This is what people ask us most.
Because some BMW models can be driven away without forced entry by way of the signal from the keyless key. A tracking system increases the chance that the car will be recovered. The requirement appears as a condition in the policy: if the system is not fitted or the subscription is not active at the time of the theft, the cover for it lapses.
No. Driving on a closed circuit falls outside ordinary car insurance, even where no times are taken. Separate temporary cover exists for those days and must be arranged in advance. Without it you pay for damage to your own car and to other participants yourself, and on these models that mounts up quickly.
Only where that damage results from a collision or impact which is itself covered. A wheel damaged when parking against a kerb, or a tyre that bursts in a pothole, counts as damage from use and falls outside own-damage cover. Tyre damage on its own without a collision is not paid for under any own-damage policy.
Theft without signs of forced entry is investigated critically by insurers. You have to report it to the police, be able to produce both keys and notify the claim as soon as reasonably possible; Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code requires that. If you meet the security requirements in the policy, the absence of signs of forced entry is not in itself a reason to refuse payment.
Every situation is different. For these situations we have a separate page.
