Insuring a Porsche Taycan

With the Taycan the policy turns on the battery pack in the floor and on the charging facility at home. Those two determine when damage can be repaired and when it cannot.

In brief

The battery pack runs along almost the entire length of the floorpan and makes up a large part of the value of the car. That shifts the line between repair and write-off. A knock on the underside, a bollard you fail to see or a drive through a flooded street leads to a safety inspection of the pack. If the pack is condemned, repair is often no longer economic.

The process after a claim is different too. A damaged traction battery cannot simply be left in an ordinary warehouse: a waiting period applies at a designated outdoor site, and the recovery firm must be equipped for it. Repair is only carried out by a firm allowed to work on high-voltage systems. So expect a longer turnaround and check whether your policy includes replacement transport and for how many days.

The third question is where you charge. A charge point or wallbox at your home is not part of the motor insurance but of the buildings or home contents insurance. The charging cable you carry with you is part of it, provided it has been declared. If you also drive a car with a combustion engine within the brand, see the Macan or the Panamera.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Trim level and engine power. From the entry version to 4S, Turbo or the Cross Turismo; power and weight both count.
  • Sum insured including the battery pack. The pack makes up a large part of the value and is included in the sum insured for the car.
  • Charging situation at home. Wallbox, portable charger or public charging only, and whether the installation was fitted by a recognised firm.
  • Storage. Charging in a locked garage is assessed differently by insurers from charging on the public road.
  • Annual mileage. The mileage you declare, with long motorway journeys counting differently from urban use.
  • Type of cover and excess. Given the high cost of repairing battery damage, own-damage cover remains defensible on this model for a long time.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

The battery determines the limit of repair

The pack sits in the floor and cannot be replaced separately like a bumper. After every contact with the underside, every collision in which the floorpan was struck and after contact with water, a diagnostic procedure follows and often a physical inspection. If the pack shows damage or unexplained cell readings, it is condemned. Because the replacement cost is high in relation to the car, the write-off threshold is reached sooner with this model than with a comparable petrol car.

Recovery, quarantine and repair time

A car with a suspect traction battery is not put in an enclosed workshop. Recovery firms use a designated outdoor location and a waiting period before the vehicle may be handled further. After that, only a repairer with high-voltage certification is allowed to work on the car, and those are thinner on the ground than ordinary body shops. So check in advance whether your policy provides replacement transport and for how many days it runs, because the turnaround here is longer than average.

Charge point, cable and charging losses

The wallbox on your wall falls under the buildings insurance (opstalverzekering), a portable charging unit usually under the home contents insurance. The cable kept in the car is an accessory: declare it, or its theft at a charge point is not covered. A fire that starts during charging raises the question of which policy bears it. That depends on where the cause lies. An installation not fitted by a recognised installer leads to argument when you claim.

What is not covered

Outside the cover: loss of capacity and degradation of the battery, because that is wear and not damage; faults in software or charging electronics with no event from outside; damage caused by charging on an uncertified or self-installed system; taking part in training on a circuit or timed runs; misuse of your charging card; and damage caused by intent or recklessness, as referred to in Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code.

Repairs and parts

Battery damage calls for specialist recovery and repair. Not every repairer is certified.

Acceptance differs per insurer

Not every company applies the same policy for this make. With unusual versions, the question is not what it costs but who will accept it.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Is the battery pack covered in a collision?

Yes. The traction battery is part of the vehicle and falls under own-damage cover in the event of an insured occurrence, just like the engine on a petrol car. You do not need a separate battery policy for it. What is not included is loss of capacity through ageing or intensive rapid charging. That is wear and is dealt with under the warranty, not the insurance.

What happens after damage to the underside?

The car is read out electronically and the pack is assessed physically. Until that examination is complete the vehicle stands at a designated outdoor location, because a damaged battery may only be brought inside safely after a waiting period. If the pack turns out to be damaged, replacement or condemnation of the car follows. So report the damage immediately, as Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code requires.

Is my charging point covered by the car insurance?

No. A wallbox fixed to the house belongs with the buildings insurance. A portable charging unit generally falls under the home contents insurance. The motor insurance only covers the car and the accessories declared with it, including the charging cable you carry. So check whether your household policy covers the charging facility and whether the installation was fitted by a recognised installer.

Is loss of battery capacity covered?

No. A battery that delivers less range after some years is not damaged but worn. Insurers exclude wear and gradual deterioration. The manufacturer's warranty on the high-voltage system exists for that. Only where loss of capacity is the direct result of an insured event, such as a collision or fire, does the pack qualify for payment.
