In brief

The S3 sits below the RS versions: compact, four-wheel drive and with enough power to fall into a higher rating group, but without the acceptance hurdles of the heaviest models. That makes it very much a car that is driven every day, often for commuting. And with a car that is driven every day, your claim-free history is in the long run the biggest lever you have.

No-claims years are personal to the driver and belong to the main driver, not to the car. Each year without an at-fault claim earns one. A single at-fault claim costs several at once, after which you drop down the bonus-malus ladder. Insurers use their own step-back tables, so the same claim does not work out the same way everywhere. When you switch, your current insurer issues a cancellation statement; with it you take your years with you.

If the S3 is driven alongside another car in the household, look at second car insurance. That often places the second policy on a derived step without your losing what you have already built up. See also how no-claims discounts work.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Work out whether claiming pays

With a small at-fault claim you first pay your excess and then lose several no-claims years, which you will see in your premium for years to come. So always ask for a repair estimate first and set it against your excess plus the effect on your premium over the coming years. If paying yourself turns out to be cheaper, most insurers will still allow you to reverse a claim already reported, provided you do so within the period stated in the conditions.

Not every claim costs you years

Glass damage that is repaired rather than replaced, damage for which the other party is fully liable and has successfully been made to pay, and usually theft, fire or storm damage as well, leave your step untouched. What does count is at-fault damage and damage whose cost the insurer cannot recover. After a collision with an unknown other party, always ask how your insurer is recording the case; that record determines your step.

What no-claims protection does and does not do

For an additional premium, protection keeps your step in place after one at-fault claim a year. Your discount then stays the same, but the underlying number of no-claims years is still reduced. If you switch afterwards, the new insurer counts that lower number. It does not take over the protection from your old policy. So when you get a quote, always ask about the number of no-claims years on the cancellation statement and not just about the discount percentage.

What building up years does not protect you against

A favourable step changes nothing about the exclusions. Driving without a valid licence or under the influence, taking part in speed events and driving on a circuit remain excluded, as do wear to brakes, tyres and clutch and mechanical defects. If you fail to mention a claims history or an earlier cancellation when you switch, that touches on the duty of disclosure in Article 7:928 DCC and the payout can be reduced under Article 7:930 DCC.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Number of no-claims years. The number on your cancellation statement determines the step and with it most of your discount.
  • The insurer's step-back table. How many steps you drop after an at-fault claim differs by company and can be asked for in advance.
  • No-claims protector. Additional cover that keeps your discount in place after one claim a year, for an additional premium.
  • Age and length of time holding a licence. Besides the years built up, age and experience count separately towards the rate in this class.
  • Second car in the household. With a second-car arrangement the second policy starts on a derived step instead of at zero.
  • Annual mileage and use. Daily commuting puts you in a different mileage class from occasional private use.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

How many no-claims years do I lose after an at-fault claim?

That differs by insurer, because every company uses its own bonus-malus table. In every case you lose more than the one year you build up in a claim-free year, and you drop a number of steps. Ask for the table before you report a claim, so that you can weigh the effect on your premium over several years against the amount of the claim.

Can I still reverse a claim I have reported?

With most insurers you can, as long as you repay the amount paid out within the period stated in the conditions. The claim is then recorded as not claimed after all and your step is restored. Ask about this specifically when you report the claim, because the period is short and runs from the date of payment, not from your notification.

Do I take my no-claims years with me when I switch?

Yes, through the cancellation statement your old insurer issues when the policy ends. It shows the number of no-claims years, the term and the claims reported. Insurers also consult those details centrally, so a differing declaration stands out. Without a statement you start on a lower step, even if you have driven claim-free for years.

Do I build up years if I drive someone else's car?

No. No-claims years belong to the main driver on the policy. If you regularly drive a car insured in someone else's name, that person builds up years and you do not. If you want to build up years yourself, have yourself registered as the main driver or take out a policy of your own, if necessary through a second-car arrangement.
