In brief

Second car insurance is motor insurance for an additional car in your household. Like every car, that second car must have at least third-party liability cover — that is required by law. What is special lies in the premium: many insurers offer a second-car arrangement (also called a family or multi-car discount), so that you do not have to start on the most expensive premium step for the second car.

At Finass Verzekert we compare more than 30 Dutch insurers and look at which provider offers the most favourable second-car arrangement. Because a second car often covers fewer kilometres and you have already built up a claims history as a household, there is usually a good deal to save on the premium for the second car.

You can only use the no-claims years you have built up for one car at a time. For the second car, many insurers therefore grant a second-car arrangement: a favourable starting step based on the claim-free history of the regular driver in the household. That way you often pay considerably less for the second car than the standard starter premium.

What does second car insurance cover?

The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.

Third-party liability insurance

The basic cover required by law and the cheapest. Often perfectly adequate for an older or little-used second car with a low market value.

  • Damage to other vehicles
  • Injury to third parties
  • Damage to buildings and objects
  • Damage caused by passengers

Third-party liability + fire and theft

Alongside third-party liability cover, also protection against theft, broken glass, storm and fire. A good balance for a second family car.

  • Fire and storm damage
  • Theft and burglary
  • Windscreen breakage and glass damage
  • Collision with animals

Comprehensive insurance

The most complete cover, including for damage you cause yourself. Advisable if your second car is new or valuable and you cannot afford to be left with a shortfall.

  • Hail damage
  • Damage through your own fault
  • Vandalism
  • Unknown party at fault

This overview concerns our service, not the cover. What is actually covered is set out in the policy conditions and on the insurer's insurance card (verzekeringskaart); you receive both before you take out cover.

What does your premium depend on?

  • No-claims years: the most decisive factor
  • Make, model and list price
  • Cover and excess chosen
  • Annual mileage
  • Age of the regular driver
  • Postcode area

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

What is second car insurance?

Second car insurance is motor insurance for an additional car in the same household. That car too must have at least third-party liability cover. The difference lies in the premium: thanks to a second-car arrangement you often pay less for the second car than the standard starter premium.

Do I get a discount if I insure a second car?

Often you do. Many insurers offer a second-car arrangement or family discount, under which the second car is given a favourable starting step based on the claim-free history in your household. The amount differs by insurer, so comparing pays off.

Can I use my no-claims years for two cars at once?

No. No-claims years you have built up can only be used for one car at a time. For the second car you therefore use the second-car arrangement, which gives a favourable premium without your using the same years twice.

How does the second-car arrangement work?

The insurer gives the second car a favourable premium step, based on the claim-free history of the regular driver in the household. That way you do not start on the most expensive step. The conditions, such as the same insurer or the same address, differ from provider to provider.

Do I have to insure my second car with the same insurer?

Not always, but with some insurers the second-car arrangement only applies if both cars are at the same address or with the same company. We compare both options and look at what is cheapest in your case.

Which cover do I choose for my second car?

That depends on the car. For an older or little-used second car, third-party liability or third-party, fire and theft is usually sufficient and cheapest. For a newer or valuable second car, comprehensive cover can be sensible. Work out your premium using the tool to compare the options.
