The M4 stands still for most of the year, and that pattern of use determines which type of policy fits it.

The M4 is the two-door version and in the Netherlands it is rarely the only car in the household. The typical pattern is a second car alongside an everyday one: fine weather, weekends, the occasional long run. Insurers have a separate treatment for that. You declare a low annual mileage and locked storage, and in return the car is assessed more favourably than one that stands on the street every day.
That favourable assessment is an agreement, not an estimate. The mileage declared appears on your policy schedule and is checked after a claim against the odometer reading shown by the MOT history and the service invoices. If you regularly drive more, report it. An adjustment during the term costs premium, a discrepancy that comes to light costs cover.
If the car stands idle for part of the year, the question of suspending the registration comes up. Suspending it with the RDW (the Dutch vehicle authority) removes the insurance obligation, but not the risk of fire or theft in storage. For the saloon version with a different pattern of use, read Insuring a BMW M3.
We compare your youngtimer insurance across dozens of insurers, explain where the real differences lie, and arrange the switch from start to finish — without you having to chase it yourself.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
We look at the terms as well as the premium, and stay your point of contact when there is a claim.
We are not tied to one insurer and compare on the basis of an objective analysis of several companies.
You call or email someone who knows your file. No menu options, no changing call centres.
We cancel your old policy and align the start date, so you are never a day without cover.
We report the claim and monitor how it is handled. In urgent cases you can reach us on the emergency line.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.
Insurers work with mileage bands and the lowest band makes a noticeable difference. What you declare appears on the policy schedule and can be checked after a claim through the mileage records from the MOT and the workshop history. If you exceed the band, an additional premium usually follows. If the difference is structural and large, it goes to the accuracy of your declaration. Correct it during the term rather than when you report a claim.
With a suspension at the RDW, the statutory insurance obligation under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM) lapses as long as the car does not come onto the public road. Fire in the garage, theft from storage and water damage carry on regardless. Some insurers offer storage or winter cover for that period, under which only the own-damage part continues. So do not cancel the policy, but have it adjusted.
A carbon roof, a carbon roof spoiler and ceramic brake discs are optional parts that are not repaired but replaced. On the convertible version the roof comes on top of that: the mechanism and the fabric are each expensive. Reckon on parking damage that stays limited on an ordinary coupe leading to a substantial estimate here. Declare the options fitted on the application, otherwise they are not built into the value.
A lower rate often goes together with a driver restriction: only you, or only drivers above a certain age. If you lend the car to someone outside that, an increased excess or no own-damage cover applies after a claim. Hire, shared use through a platform and use in competitions or on a circuit are excluded as standard, as are wear and defects that arise during long periods standing idle.
Carbon parts and ceramic brakes make even small claims expensive.
Not every company applies the same policy for this make. With unusual versions, the question is not what it costs but who will accept it.
This is what people ask us most.
On the application you choose the mileage band that matches your actual use, and it goes on the policy schedule. Keep a record of the readings yourself, for instance through the MOT reports. If you notice halfway through the year that you are driving more, report it; the premium is adjusted and you avoid an argument after a claim about what you declared.
Yes. On suspension the compulsory third-party liability cover lapses because the car may not come onto the public road, but you can keep the own-damage cover running at a lower premium. That keeps you covered for fire, theft and storm in storage. Do not cancel the policy completely: you then lose the relationship built up and have to go through underwriting again when you restart.
That depends on your policy schedule. If there is a driver restriction on it, the cover applies only to the named drivers or to drivers above a certain age. If someone else drives, an increased excess may apply or own-damage cover may be missing. If you want to lend the car regularly, have the restriction widened; that is a question of premium, not a refusal.
You can, but you then fall outside the enthusiast schemes that require a second car. You end up on ordinary car insurance with a normal mileage, and the premium picture changes accordingly. On the most powerful versions, insurers also set requirements as to age and no-claims years. Have your situation put to several companies before you buy the car.
