Insuring a BMW Motorrad

BMW Motorrad ranges from a tourer with a boxer engine to a superbike of almost two hundred horsepower. That spread determines the premium, and the accessories determine whether your claim is paid in full.

In brief

The name BMW Motorrad covers widely differing motorcycles: the R series with boxer engine, the adventure bikes and tourers, the S 1000 RR as a superbike, the lighter F and G models and the heritage versions. To an insurer these are different risks. Engine capacity, power output, list price and how prone the model is to theft together determine which premium class your machine falls into.

Third-party liability cover is compulsory under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM) and pays only for the damage you cause to someone else with the machine. Damage to the machine itself falls under own-damage cover. With motorcycles that weighs more heavily than with cars: a machine falling over in a car park quickly produces damage to cylinder heads, crash bars, fairing panels and mirrors, and that is precisely the kind of damage that falls outside third-party liability and outside third-party, fire and theft.

Two points deserve extra attention with this make. First the accessories: pannier sets, top box, satnav, hand guards, crash bars and exhaust systems are often bought separately and are insured only if they have been declared and appear on the policy. Second the security: for motorcycles, insurers regularly set requirements for the lock, and if those are not met, theft is not covered.

Which cover suits your BMW Motorrad?

Three forms of cover, with beneath them the situations that arise most often with motorcycles.

Compulsory

Third-party liability

The legally required cover for damage you cause to others with the motorcycle.

  • Damage to property and injury to third parties
  • No cover for your own motorcycle
  • Compulsory under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM)
  • No cover for your own injury either
Intermediate option

Third-party liability + fire and theft

On top of that to third-party liability, a fixed list of events, with theft as the main element.

  • Theft and attempted theft
  • Fire, explosion and lightning strike
  • Storm and hail damage
  • Damage from a fall remains for your own account
Most chosen

Comprehensive

Your own damage too, including falls with no other party involved.

  • Damage from falls and tip-overs with no other party involved
  • A collision that was your own doing
  • Accessories provided they are declared
  • You can choose your own excess

What makes the difference with BMW Motorrad

Four points that arise more often with this make than with an average motorcycle.

The model determines the premium class

A R 1250 GS and a S 1000 RR carry the same badge, but to an insurer they are not comparable. Power output, engine capacity and list price all count, and for superbike models the average claims burden and the theft figures as well. So state the exact type designation and the registration number on the application. An application based on the make alone produces a premium that will not hold up when a claim is made, and that affects cover through Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code.

Accessories and panniers are not automatically insured

Side panniers, a top box, a satnav, a raised screen, hand guards, crash bars or a different exhaust together represent a considerable amount. Insurers usually pay for accessories only up to a stated maximum and only if they have been declared. Make a list with photographs and purchase receipts and have it added to the policy. What is inside the panniers — luggage, tools, personal belongings — is usually not included. That is a matter for your travel or home contents insurance.

Theft protection and storage

For motorcycles, insurers set requirements for security more often than for cars: an an approved lock, sometimes with a chain lock to a fixed point, and on more expensive models additional measures. If such a requirement is in the policy and was not met at the time of the theft, the claim is declined. Keep the purchase receipt for the lock and state where the machine stands at night. If the storage situation changes, for example because you move house, report that as a change of risk.

What is not covered

The following, among others, are outside the cover: taking part in track days, speed events and gymkhanas, even when it is not ridden against the clock; motorcycle clothing and helmet, which are paid for only under additional cover and up to a maximum; wear and tear and mechanical faults without an external cause, such as a defective clutch or gearbox; and damage during hire, instruction use or carriage for hire or reward. There is also no cover for riding without a valid category A licence or under the influence, and intent and recklessness are excluded under Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Type and power output: tourer or superbike
  • List price and accessories: including panniers and satnav
  • Age and experience of the driver: years holding a category A licence count
  • No-claims years: these determine your discount step
  • Storage and security: a locked garage counts in your favour
  • Type of cover and excess: third-party liability, third-party, fire and theft, or comprehensive

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Is an S 1000 RR more expensive to insure than an R 1250 GS?

Usually yes. A superbike has more power, a higher claims burden and a greater theft risk, which puts the model in a higher premium class. A tourer with a boxer engine is generally ridden more calmly and over longer distances. How much difference it makes varies widely between insurers, so comparing pays; in both cases state the exact type designation.

Are my panniers and sat nav covered as well?

Only if they have been declared and appear on the policy, and usually up to a stated maximum amount. Factory accessories fitted at delivery are often included in the list price, parts fitted later are not. What lies inside the panniers is not part of the motorcycle insurance; luggage and personal belongings fall under travel or home contents insurance. Keep purchase receipts and photographs.

Will my motorcycle clothing be paid for after a fall?

Not as standard. Motorcycle clothing, helmet, gloves and boots fall outside ordinary own-damage cover. Many insurers offer additional cover for this with a maximum amount per event, sometimes only for a collision and not for a single-vehicle fall. Read the conditions on this point, because the differences between insurers are considerable here.

Can I suspend the registration of my motorcycle in winter?

Yes. On suspension through the RDW (the Dutch vehicle authority), the duty to insure under Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM) lapses and you pay no vehicle tax, but the machine may not use the public road. Many insurers also have a winter break or storage arrangement under which own-damage cover continues at a lower premium. Do not simply cancel the policy, because theft and fire remain possible while the machine is stored.

Is a track day covered?

No. Riding on a circuit falls outside virtually every motorcycle policy, even on a touring run without timing. If you do want to go on the circuit, separate temporary cover is needed through the organiser or a specialist insurer. Do not assume it without written confirmation. A declined claim after a fall on the circuit easily costs you the market value of the machine.

What if I have a different exhaust or software fitted?

Report it in advance. A non-factory exhaust or a change to the engine software is a change of risk and sometimes a reason for a loading or a refusal. If you do it without reporting it, the insurer can reduce or refuse payment for a claim under Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code. Keep the approval papers for the part with your policy.
