Car insurance for the Audi S7

The S7 is a fastback that almost always takes to the road for business. That makes the registered ownership and the valuation arrangement more important than the power.

In brief

An S7 Sportback is usually registered to a business or driven on an operating lease. That has consequences which have nothing to do with the car itself: the policyholder is then the company, the no-claims years accrue in the company's name and the driver builds up nothing personally. If you want to use those years privately later, have a written statement issued when the policy ends; reconstructing it afterwards rarely works.

The body makes up the second half of the story. A fastback has a large, electrically operated tailgate with an integrated spoiler, frameless doors and painted panels that run well into the roof. Damage at the rear therefore quickly affects several panels at once. Combined with the steep depreciation in this segment that means: repair costs rise faster than the market value falls, and a total loss comes into view sooner than you would think.

So choose deliberately between market value and an agreed value. On a new or nearly new S7 a replacement value as new or purchase price arrangement works. It applies only for a limited period and the conditions vary considerably. On an older example a valuation under Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code is sometimes more useful, because the question of value is then settled in advance. Compare the forms of cover in comprehensive or third-party, fire and theft.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Registered to a business or privately. A car registered to a business is rated differently from the same car held privately.
  • Number and age of the drivers. A fixed group of drivers produces a more favourable assessment than an open group of drivers.
  • Valuation arrangement chosen. Replacement value as new, purchase price or market value: the wider the arrangement, the higher the premium.
  • Age of the car. On a fastback the market value and the repair costs diverge quickly, which affects the own-damage part.
  • Where the car is kept during the day. A car parked on an industrial estate or at clients' premises runs a different risk from one in a garage.
  • Excess on own-damage claims. On business policies a higher excess is often chosen to bring the premium down.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Who is the policyholder, who is the driver

If the S7 belongs to the business, the company is the policyholder and you are only the driver. That determines who may change the policy, who reports a claim and in whose name the no-claims discount accrues. If you also drive it privately, check that private use is permitted; some business policies exclude it or limit it to the driver declared. Have the intended use recorded on the policy schedule.

The rear is the expensive part

On a fastback the vulnerability to damage sits at the back. The large tailgate with its spoiler mechanism, the full-width rear light, the sensors in the bumper and the painted transition into the roof turn parking damage into a multi-panel repair. If the tailgate is replaced, paintwork on the side panels often follows to prevent a difference in colour. Expect this type of damage to weigh more heavily in the choice between repair and a total loss.

Replacement value as new, purchase price or valuation

A nearly new S7 loses value quickly, while the repair costs do not. A purchase price arrangement keeps you, in the first years, at the amount you paid yourself in the event of a total loss. That arrangement always has a time limit and often the requirement that you are the first owner or that the car was bought from an approved dealer. Ask for the exact period and conditions before you fix the policy.

What is not covered

The following remain outside the cover: a fall in value after a technically correct repair, unless expressly insured; wear and mechanical defects, including faults in the tailgate or spoiler mechanism without a collision; damage caused by a driver who is not on the policy where the policy limits the group of drivers; driving on a circuit or in a speed event; and damage arising when the car has been made available to others for payment.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Who gets the no-claims years if the S7 belongs to the business?

The company, because it is the policyholder. As the driver you build up nothing yourself. Many insurers do issue a statement when the policy ends setting out how many years you drove claim-free. With it you can usually take part of the discount over to a private policy. Ask for that statement at the moment the car goes.

When is the S7 declared a total loss?

When the repair costs exceed the market value, or come close to it and repair is not technically justifiable. On a fastback in particular that happens sooner, because damage at the rear affects several panels and the spoiler assembly. With a purchase price or agreed value arrangement the payout is not based on the market value, which on a young car can make a considerable difference.

May a colleague drive the car occasionally?

That depends on the driver clause. If the policy names a limited group, a journey by someone else is not covered or an increased excess applies. If the group is open, anyone with a valid licence may drive. Check this before you hand over the key, not afterwards.

Does the insurer pay for the fall in value after a claim?

Not as standard. A properly executed repair counts as full restoration, even if the car fetches less with a damage history. Some insurers offer separate cover for diminished value, usually only on young cars and with a maximum. Always have the damage repaired by an approved firm and keep the estimate. That limits the argument when you sell.
