The RS5 is rarely registered in a private name: the coupé and the Sportback usually come through a lease or through the business, and the first question is then who the policyholder is.

Where the Avant versions in the same range are used as family cars, the RS5 is a two- or five-door coupé model that is often driven for business. That changes the policy fundamentally. With operating lease the leasing company is the owner and insures the vehicle. You are the user and at most pay an excess. With financial lease the car is registered in your name and you have to arrange the insurance yourself, and the lender almost always requires own-damage cover for as long as the loan is being repaid.
That division also determines who builds up no-claims years. If you drive a car belonging to a leasing company, you build up nothing on that policy. If you later move to a car of your own, you start without any no-claims discount. So always ask for a claims history statement at the end of a lease contract. Some insurers accept it as evidence.
If the car belongs to the business and you also drive it privately, that use belongs on the policy. You can read more about that distinction under business car insurance and about the form of finance under financial lease.
The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.
Damage you cause to others.
Causes beyond your control.
Including damage you cause yourself.
What is covered
| Situation | Third-party liability | Third-party, fire and theft | Comprehensive |
|---|---|---|---|
| Damage to the other party | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Theft | No | Yes | Yes |
| Fire and storm | No | Yes | Yes |
| Damage you cause yourself | No | No | Yes |
| Wear and mechanical defects | No | No | No |
| Driving without a valid licence | No | No | No |
This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.
Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.
With operating lease the cover runs through the leasing company and you do not need a policy of your own. There is, however, an excess for each event that is charged on to you. With financial lease, or with a car on your company's balance sheet, you are the policyholder yourself and the lender usually requires comprehensive cover. Never take out a second policy alongside existing lease cover: double insurance leads to delay and to settlement between insurers.
Insurers distinguish between private use, commuting and business use, and rate them differently. If you carry clients or staff, transport goods or go out on the road for your business, declare it. An incorrect declaration of use falls under the duty of disclosure in Article 7:928 DCC and can lead to a reduced payout when you claim, under Article 7:930 DCC. Carrying passengers for payment falls outside an ordinary policy in any event.
At the end of a lease contract there is a return inspection. Scratches, wheel damage, a worn interior, missing keys and tyres run down too far are then charged on to you. That is damage from use and it does not fall under own-damage cover: insurance pays for a sudden event, not for gradual deterioration. Have damage that does result from an event repaired in good time and report it to the leasing company, rather than waiting until the car goes back.
The following remain excluded: driving on a circuit or in speed events, hire and carrying passengers for payment, driving without a valid licence and damage caused by mechanical or electronic defects. The duty to notify counts here too: Article 7:941 DCC requires you to report a loss as soon as possible. With a leased car that means two notifications, to the leasing company and to its insurer, because repair instructions there often run through a fixed network.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
This is what people ask us most.
No. The leasing company is the owner and insures the vehicle. That is included in the monthly payment. When you claim you pay the excess agreed in the contract. Do not take out a policy of your own alongside it, because double insurance only causes delay. Do check which cover is included and whether a replacement vehicle and assistance are part of the contract.
In principle no: the policy is in the name of the leasing company. At the end of the contract, ask for a claims history statement showing the period and the number of claims. Some insurers accept that as support for a new policy. Without such a statement you start without any accrued discount when you get a car of your own.
They are assessed against the return conditions and charged on to you. Damage from use, such as scratches, wheel damage and wear, falls outside any own-damage cover, because there is no sudden event behind it. Damage from a collision or vandalism should be reported to the leasing company, preferably straight away rather than only when the car goes back.
You may, provided that use is described in the policy. Insurers ask specifically about the ratio between business and private mileage and rate accordingly. An incorrect declaration can lead to a reduced payout when you claim. Tax on private use is a separate matter: that is between you and the Belastingdienst, not between you and the insurer.
