Motocross and your insurance

Cross appears on sports lists for two very different activities: cross-country running on foot and riding a motorcycle or quad off-road. For your cover, that makes all the difference.

In brief

If by cross you mean a cross-country running, there is little to worry about. Running through woods and fields counts as an ordinary sport: injury falls under personal accident and travel cover, and damage you cause to someone else under your personal liability insurance. Only taking part in competitions may need to be arranged separately.

Is it a matter of riding a motorcycle, quad or buggy off-road, the picture changes entirely. Speed and skill competitions are a standard exclusion on travel and personal accident policies, and personal liability insurance excludes damage caused with a motor vehicle . Motor insurance is needed for that, and an ordinary motorcycle policy does not cover competitions or training on a motocross track.

What is covered in cross?

Three things determine your cover: which kind of cross you mean, whether a motor vehicle is involved and whether you are riding against the clock.

On foot

Cross-country and trail running

Normally included as a recreational sport.

  • Injury under personal accident or travel cover
  • Liability through the AVP
  • Check competitions separately
Motorised

Motocross and quad riding

Falls outside personal liability insurance.

  • Motor vehicles are excluded on the AVP
  • Separate third-party liability cover needed
  • Off-road riding often limited to a circuit
Competition

Against the clock or for position

Competition is the breaking point in both versions.

  • Speed competitions excluded
  • Training for them as well
  • Day cover through the organiser

Where things go wrong in practice

Two points that determine whether you are insured after a fall.

Say exactly which cross you mean

Insurers use the same word for a cross-country running and for motocross, while the risk classes are far apart. So do not ask whether cross is covered, but have the activity recorded by name and form. On entering into the contract, the duty of disclosure under Article 7:928 of the Dutch Civil Codeapplies; an incomplete declaration can reduce the payout or cause it to lapse (Article 7:930 of the Dutch Civil Code).

With a motor vehicle you fall outside the AVP

Personal liability insurance excludes damage caused with a motor vehicle . For taking part in traffic, the compulsory insurance requirement of Article 2 of the Dutch Motor Insurance Liability Act (WAM)also applies. If you ride on a closed site, an ordinary motorcycle policy usually excludes competitions, training and skill events; organisers therefore work with day cover. Reckless riding remains uninsured under Article 7:952 of the Dutch Civil Code in any event.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Nature of the activity — on foot or motorised
  • Competitive setting — recreational, training or competition
  • Type of vehicle — motocross bike, quad or buggy
  • Terrain and country — circuit, nature reserve or abroad
  • Sums insured — mainly for injury and disability
  • Age and experience — youth class or experienced rider

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is why comparing pays off.

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often about this.

Is cross-country running simply insured?

Recreational running across country counts as an ordinary sport and falls under standard personal accident, travel and liability cover. If you take part in competitions, check whether your policy excludes competitive participation; that occurs in running too.

Does my AVP cover damage caused with a motocross bike?

No. Damage caused with a motor vehicle is excluded on personal liability insurance, including on a motocross track. You need motor insurance or the organiser's day cover for that.

Can I ride motocross on an ordinary motorcycle policy?

For commuting and touring, yes; for competitions and training on a circuit, usually not. These are excluded in virtually every policy. Ask the organiser what day cover is arranged and what excess applies to it.

What if I ride cross abroad?

The same exclusions apply, plus the question of whether your travel insurance accepts the sport. Declare the activity in advance and ask for written confirmation; otherwise medical costs and repatriation remain at your own expense.

Are you going riding cross?

Have it recorded in advance which form is involved; we will find out what cover goes with it.
