In brief

The Model Y is the car from this range you come across most often, and that shows in the claims picture. It is a hatchback with a continuous glass roof and a large, steeply raked rear window. Stone chips, a chip in the glass and breakage are therefore the most frequently reported claims, well ahead of the spectacular cases.

Glass damage falls under third-party, fire and theft and under comprehensive cover, but the difference is in the details. Behind the windscreen sit cameras for the driver assistance systems. After replacement they have to be calibrated. Ask whether those calibration costs are included in the glass claim and whether the glass roof falls under the same provision or is arranged separately.

Do you drive the car under a lease arrangement? Then the question of who the policyholder is matters at least as much as the cover itself. For the larger SUV from the same range: car insurance for the Tesla Model X.

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

What does your premium depend on?

  • Version and drivetrain. The dual-motor variant is rated higher than the entry-level version with rear-wheel drive.
  • Business or private use. A company car with changing drivers is assessed differently from a family car.
  • Annual mileage. A high mileage means more exposure to stone chips and to collision risk, and therefore a higher step.
  • Glass cover and the excess on glass. Whether glass repair is possible without an excess and whether the panoramic roof is included differs from insurer to insurer.
  • Security and where the vehicle is kept. The postcode area, alarm class and lockable storage all count in the theft risk.
  • No-claims years. The years built up by the regular driver determine the discount step and therefore the premium.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.

Glass, roof glass and calibration

A chip that can be repaired costs no excess with many insurers, or a lower one than full replacement; waiting until the crack spreads is therefore expensive. Behind the windscreen sit cameras that have to be set up again after replacement, and those costs belong to the claim. Scratches, dull patches and stone chipping without breakage are not glass damage and are not paid for. Check separately whether the panoramic roof falls under the glass cover.

A volume model is not back on the road sooner

The fact that there are many of them about does not mean that repairs go quickly: specialist body shops and the supply of parts determine the turnaround time. A replacement vehicle is not a standard part of the own-damage cover and, on a long repair, is often limited in time. Loss of use, taxi costs or the hire of another car are not paid for if you have not insured that in advance.

Leasing, business use and the policyholder

With an operating lease, the leasing company insures the car and you have no policy of your own. With private lease or finance lease the position is different: check who the policyholder is, whether comprehensive cover has been made compulsory and whether a residual debt after a total loss is covered, because the latter is not standard cover. If an employee drives a company car privately and causes damage, Article 7:661 of the Dutch Civil Code protects them against recovery, except where there is intent or conscious recklessness.

Theft, keys and security

Theft falls under third-party, fire and theft and comprehensive cover, but insurers set conditions: a report to the police and handing in all keys or key cards. If you use your phone as a key, keep track of who has access. Losing a key or having locks replaced is not an insured loss. Theft of a charging cable, roof bars or other accessories is only paid for where they have been declared.

Frequently asked questions

This is what people ask us most.

Does glass damage cost me no-claims years?

With virtually all insurers, no. Glass damage is recorded separately and does not feed through into your bonus-malus step, provided you have it handled through the designated glass repair chain. If you have it repaired outside that chain, a higher excess often applies. Repairing a chip is almost always cheaper than replacing the whole windscreen with calibration.

Is the glass roof insured under the glass cover?

That differs from policy to policy and is one of the few points on which the conditions for this model really do vary. Some insurers count only windows that serve for looking through, so the windscreen, side windows and rear window, as part of the glass cover; a panoramic roof then falls under ordinary own-damage cover with the normal excess. Ask about this in advance and have it confirmed in writing.

Who insures the car with private lease?

Usually the leasing company, with the costs included in the monthly amount and comprehensive cover compulsory. Check which excess applies, whether a replacement vehicle is included and what happens on a total loss: a residual debt against the lease contract is not standard cover. With finance lease you are more often the policyholder yourself and therefore arrange the policy yourself.

My employee also drives the Model Y privately. What does that mean?

Declare that use, because it is part of the information on which acceptance is based. If the employee causes damage in the course of their work, the employer is liable towards third parties under Article 6:170 of the Dutch Civil Code. Recovery from the employee is limited: Article 7:661 DCC only allows it where there is intent or conscious recklessness.
