Private lease · lease contract · no-claims years
Many C4s are driven on a lease contract, and then the question is not which policy you choose but what is already included in your monthly payment and what is not.

If you drive the C4 on a private lease or through a business lease contract, you are not the owner. The leasing company is, and it is usually the policyholder as well. The cover is built into the monthly payment and the conditions are not yours but those of the contract. So when you claim you go first to the leasing company and not to an insurer of your choice.
That has a consequence that only becomes visible after years: on a leased car you often build up no no-claims years in your own name. If you then move to a car registered to you, you start low in the bonus-malus table. Some providers do record the claim-free history. Ask about that in advance and have it confirmed in writing, because a statement is rarely obtainable afterwards.
At the end of the contract comes the return inspection. There a distinction is made between insured damage and damage from use: scratches, small dents and damaged trim that fall within the return conditions are charged to you and not to the insurer. What does and does not count as acceptable is set out in the return protocol accompanying the contract.
The structure of the cover in three parts, with an overview per situation below.
Damage you cause to others.
Causes beyond your control.
Including damage you cause yourself.
What is covered
| Situation | Third-party liability | Third-party, fire and theft | Comprehensive |
|---|---|---|---|
| Damage to the other party | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Theft | No | Yes | Yes |
| Fire and storm | No | Yes | Yes |
| Damage you cause yourself | No | No | Yes |
| Wear and mechanical defects | No | No | No |
| Driving without a valid licence | No | No | No |
This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.
Four points that make the difference between a policy that pays out and one that does not.
Under a lease contract the car is registered to the leasing company, which also takes out the policy. So you do not choose the form of cover, the excess or the repairer yourself. When you claim you go to the leasing company, which passes the claim on. If you want to know where you stand, ask for the policy schedule or the description of cover that belongs with the contract; those documents determine your position, not a quote from an insurer.
No-claims years accrue to the policyholder. If that is the leasing company, the history does not go into your name and you have nothing to show at the end. For anyone insuring a car of their own after a lease period, that means starting on a low step and a higher premium. When you take out the contract, ask whether the provider issues a claim-free driving statement and on what conditions.
Alongside the statutory duty to notify in Article 7:941 of the Dutch Civil Code the lease contract sets requirements of its own: notification within a stated period, repair at a designated repairer, always a completed accident statement and sometimes a compulsory police report. If you depart from that by choosing a garage yourself, the costs may remain at your expense. On a total loss or theft the contract usually ends, with a settlement under the contract conditions.
The lease rate covers the car, not everything around it. Usually outside the cover are: damage to the load and personal belongings, fines and administrative charges, damage from use settled at the return inspection, and the excess for each event. Occupants' indemnity insurance and legal expenses cover are far from always included. Carrying people or goods for payment is excluded under practically every contract.
Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.
Customers rate our service on four aspects: personal service, service delivery, availability and the outcome. The reviews are collected and published by NH1816 and come from customers who have actually taken out a policy with Finass Advies B.V. or reported a claim.
This is what people ask us most.
Usually not. The policy is in the name of the leasing company and the claim-free history is recorded in that name. At the end of the contract you then have nothing to show and you start low in the bonus-malus table. A number of providers do issue a statement. Ask about that when you take out the contract and have the assurance recorded in writing.
To the leasing company, and within the period stated in the contract. It passes the claim on to the insurer and designates a repairer. Always complete an accident statement and photograph both vehicles. If you choose a garage on your own initiative, you run the risk that the bill will not be paid.
Damage that under the return protocol no longer counts as normal signs of use: deep scratches, dents, damaged trim or missing parts. That is charged to you and is not insured damage. Go over the car yourself before the return inspection with the protocol in hand and have small blemishes repaired beforehand if appropriate.
Often yes. Occupants' indemnity insurance, legal expenses cover for recovery from another party and cover for belongings in the car are usually not included in the monthly payment. Go through the description of cover with the contract and add what is missing. Your liability as the driver rests with you in all cases.
