In letter

The Audi Q8 arrived in 2018 as a coupé-style variant on the Q7 platform, with a lower roofline, frameless doors and always five seats. In the Netherlands it was supplied with V6 Diesel and petrol engines, for a time as the 55 and 60 TFSI e plug-in hybrids, and as the SQ8 with a V8. In 2023 it was facelifted with new lighting. The RS Q8 and the electric Q8 e-tron are separate models with their own points of attention.

The list price of a new Q8 in the Netherlands is typically between € 110,000 and € 150,000, depending on engine and options. At these amounts virtually all Insurers require a tracking system, often class 5 with driver recognition, and some set requirements for where the car is kept.

Repair costs are high. Standard large 21 or 22-inch wheels, HD matrix LED headlights, a full-width rear light bar, air suspension and an extensive sensor package make even a minor collision expensive. The market value falls quickly in the first years, so substantial damage to a used Q8 can already lead to a total loss.

What does Audi Q8 Car insurance cover?

For a Q8, the choice depends on the security, the market value and how it compares with the repair costs.

Compulsory

Third-party liability

Rarely suitable for a Q8, because theft and damage to your own car are then entirely at your expense.

  • Damage to others with your Q8
  • No cover for theft or damage to your own car
  • Only if you deliberately bear the risk yourself
Third-party liability plus

Third-party, fire and theft

An option for an older Q8 where theft and glass damage are the biggest risks.

  • Theft, with a tracking system as a condition
  • Windscreen with camera and acoustic glass
  • Hail and storm damage
Comprehensive cover

Comprehensive

The usual cover for a recent Q8, a TFSI e and the SQ8.

  • Damage to wheels, bumpers and sensors
  • Air suspension repair after an impact
  • New-value scheme in the first years

This overview is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions, limits and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the Insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover. Taking out cover without advice? Then read what execution only means for you.

What does your premium depend on?

  • The model's repair costs. Insurers look at the average repair cost per claim. A lot of electronics at the front pushes that up.
  • Presence of driver assistance systems. Systems that have to be calibrated after a windscreen replacement push up the average glass claims cost.
  • Glass cover chosen. Whether glass damage falls under third-party, fire and theft or only under comprehensive, and subject to what excess.
  • Repair inside or outside the network. Repair through an approved repairer often means a reduced or waived excess.
  • List price including options. Lighting, glass and assistance packages increase the interest to be insured.
  • Annual mileage and Type of road. A high motorway mileage increases the chance of stone chips and with it the frequency of glass claims.

Insurers weigh these details differently. That is where your saving is.

Where things go wrong in practice

What needs extra attention with a Q8.

Class 5 and parking

With a list price above roughly € 100,000, most Insurers require a class 5 tracking system with driver recognition. Some companies also want to know where the car is parked at night, for example on your own property or in a locked garage. With a used car, check that the system works and that the subscription is in your name. If the car is stolen without a working system, the insurer can refuse to pay out. Also keep the keyless key shielded.

Large wheels and low-profile tyres

A Q8 comes as standard on large wheels with low-profile tyres. A kerb or a pothole then quickly leads to damage to the wheel, tyre and sometimes the suspension. A single wheel of this size often costs more than a thousand euros. With many Insurers, wheel damage is only covered under comprehensive (allrisk), and often only if there is also other damage to the car. Some policies offer separate wheel and tyre cover, which is worth considering for this car.

Frameless doors

The Q8 has doors without window frames. The windows drop slightly when the door opens and only close fully once the door is shut. If a door is damaged, for example by another car in a car park, the window mechanism often needs adjusting as well. A break-in through a side window causes more damage than with a conventional door. Break-in damage is covered under third-party, fire and theft (Limited airframe) and comprehensive; a dent with no other party involved only under comprehensive.

Depreciation and purchase value

A Q8 loses a large part of its value in the first years. If you buy a three or four-year-old Q8, you often pay a fraction of the original list price, while repair costs remain at the level of a new car. After substantial damage the insurer may then already decide on a total loss. A purchase-value scheme pays your purchase price in the first years after buying. Not every insurer offers this for cars in this class.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about the Q8.

Is a Q8 more expensive to insure than a Q7?

Often, yes. With a comparable engine the Q8 has a higher list price, larger wheels and more expensive parts, such as the rear light bar and the frameless doors. Insurers also see a higher average claims cost. With third-party liability (WA) the difference is limited, with comprehensive it is noticeable. A comparison based on the registration number gives the actual difference. We put both models side by side for you.

Roughly what does comprehensive Insurance for a Q8 cost?

As an indication, Comprehensive cover for a recent Q8 with an experienced driver is often between € 150 and € 250 per month. Your place of residence, no-claims years (schadevrije jaren), excess and mileage determine the outcome. An SQ8 is higher. A higher excess can lower the premium considerably for a car in this class.

What is the difference between the Q8 and the Q8 e-tron for Insurance?

They are different cars. The Q8 has a combustion engine or plug-in hybrid; the Q8 e-tron is fully electric and was previously simply called the e-tron. With the e-tron, Insurance revolves mainly around battery damage and depreciation. With the Q8, security, wheels and air suspension play a bigger role. So always provide the registration number.

Does every insurer accept a Q8?

Most large insurers accept a standard Q8, provided the security is in order and the driver has enough experience. For the SQ8 there are fewer companies. Some insurers ask for photos, an inspection or details of where the car is kept. We know which companies accept cars in this class and on what terms. So always Request a quote before you buy.
