Business van insurance

A van in a company name is assessed differently from a private one. The use is more intensive, more drivers use it, and there is almost always value in the load space.

In brief

With a business van, insurers look at the use: construction, installation, delivery or carriage for third parties each have their own risk profile. An incorrect declaration leads to a reduction in the payout when there is a claim.

The fit-out (shelving, racking, signwriting) and the contents are not insured on the own-damage policy. You insure those with business contents or own-account carriage insurance.

What to look out for

Changing drivers

If several members of staff drive it, report it. Young drivers weigh heavily on the premium and on acceptance.

Delivery is a separate risk

Many stops, brief parking and time pressure lead to more claims. Without a declaration, a payout can be refused.

Declare the fit-out with its value

Shelving, racking and lettering soon represent thousands of euros and fall outside the cover as standard, or up to a low maximum.

From a few vans onwards: a fleet

If you have more than a handful of vehicles, a fleet policy is better value and easier to manage.

What determines the premium

  • List price and payload
  • Use: construction, installation or delivery
  • Number and age of the drivers
  • Annual mileage and storage
  • Cover and excess chosen

Calculate the premium

This information is general in nature and is not personal advice. What is actually covered, including exclusions and the excess, is set out in the policy conditions and the insurance card (verzekeringskaart) of the insurer; you receive both before you take out cover.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference from private van insurance?

The use and the circle of drivers. Business use is more intensive and several members of staff drive the vehicle more often, which determines the premium and acceptance.

Are my tools covered as well?

No. For that you need own-account carriage insurance, with requirements as to where the vehicle is parked overnight.

May I use the van for deliveries?

Only if you have declared it. Delivery counts as a separate risk with its own rate.

From when is a fleet policy more convenient?

From about three to five vehicles, mainly because of the administration and registering new vehicles.
